Contextual Overview
1One day while Jesus was giving a clinic on the bank of the Sea of Galilee, there were so many people that they were crowding in on him.
2He looked around and saw two empty boats docked by the water's edge. The fishermen were cleaning their nets nearby.
3Jesus went and got into one of these boats and asked the owner, a fellow named Simon, to push it out a little way into the water. He stood and taught right from the boat so everyone could see and hear him.
4When he was done with his clinic, he told Simon to paddle his boat out into the deep water and let down his nets.
5Simon told him, "Sir, we fished out there all night and didn't catch nothing. But if you say so, we'll go out again."
6When they did, they caught so many fish their nets starting tearing apart.
7They hollered for some help and soon other boat's nets were so full that they too began to nearly sink.
8When Simon Peter finally caught on to what was happening, he hit one knee before Jesus and said, "Lord, you've got to ride away from here. I'm not worthy enough to be within your sight."
9His heart was beating fast with amazement at what he'd just experienced.
10James and John, his other partners, were also amazed.Jesus smiled and said, "Don't be afraid of being with me. You're gonna come with me and I'm going to help you go from catching fish to gathering strays."

Two ships - The ships used on so small a lake were probably no more than fishing-boats without decks, and easily drawn up on the beach. Josephus says there were 230 of them on the lake, attended by four or five men each. That they were small is also clear from the account commonly given of them. A single large draught of fishes endangered them and came near sinking them.

They appear to have been only such small boats as are used to manage nets on flat smooth beaches: one end of the net is attached to the shore; the fishermen row out, and drop the net as they go, making a kind of semicircle from the shore; they return, and bring the rope attached to the other end with them, and then the net is hauled on shore; and, as it was sunk with weights to the bottom, and floated with corks at the top, all the fish in that compass were included, and drawn to shore.
