Simplified Cowboy Version

John 17

The Time Has Come

1 After he'd finished saying all of this, Jesus looked up and said, "Dad, the time has come. Bring honor to your Son so he can bring honor to you. 2 You've given your Boy all authority over everyone. If you bring 'em to the Son, he will give them eternal life. 3 Eternal life is simply knowing you, the true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to save 'em. 4 I've honored you by finishing the work you gave me to do. 5 Now, Father, clothe me in the glory I had before the world began.

Jesus Prays for His Cowboys

6 "God, I have shown you to the cowboys you brought me. They were yours and you gave them to me. They have kept their word and ride only for you. 7 They finally understand that everything I've given them has come from you. 8 I only gave them words you gave me, and they believed. They know I came from you and you sent me. 9 I pray for them, Dad. I ain't praying for those of the world, but only for those you've given me. I pray for 'em because they are yours. 10 Everything I have is yours, and everything you have is mine. These cowboys have honored me. 11 I'm headed home, but they will be stuck here for a while longer. Holy Father, keep them safe by the power of your name, and the power of the name you gave me. That way they can be as close as me and you. 12 I've been watching over them, and I didn't lose a single one. None has been lost except the one who was destined for destruction. It had to happen that way to fulfill the things written long ago in the Good Book.

13 "I'm headed your way, but I say these things while I'm still here. I want them to feel the same way about you as I do. They need to feel that kind of joy. 14 I've given them your Word, but the world hates them because of it. They stand out now just as I did. 15 I'm not asking you to remove them from this world, but to protect them from the devil. 16 They don't belong to him any more than I did.

17 "Use the truth to make them holy like you. Your word is the truth. 18 I've given them a mission just like you gave me. 19 I'm offering myself as a holy sacrifice so that they may be made holy by your word.

Jesus Prays for All Who Believe

20 "This prayer isn't just for them. I also pray for all of those who will ride for me because of my cowboy's work. 21 I want them to be as close to us as you and I are to each other. I want them to know us so completely that the world will believe you sent me. 22 I'm giving them the same honor and glory you gave me. I did this so we could all be united in love and purpose. 23 I am with them, and you are with me. We are all together now. Since we are one, the world will finally realize you sent me and you love them just as you have loved me.

24 "Dad, I want all those who ride for me to be where I am. Only when they are with me will they be able to see the glory you gave me. Only then can they see that you have loved me since before the world was made. 25 Dad, you have done everything right, the world still doesn't know you, but I do. My cowboys know you too. They know that you sent me down here to save them. 26 I have shown them who you are and will continue to do so. I want them to know you so that the love you have for me will be experienced by them. They will experience the love I have experienced."
