Simplified Cowboy Version

1 Peter 4

Cowboys Know How to Suffer

1 Don't you remember that Jesus suffered physically? If it happened to him it will happen to you so be ready. If you suffer for the same reasons Jesus suffered then that proves you are done with sin. 2 This is good news because you will no longer be chasing your tails, but will be ready to ride for the Lord. 3 You've had your fill of living a sorry life with its lust, sex parties, drunken stupors, and worshiping man-made things. 4 And now, all those you used to run around with are surprised you no longer do these things. Don't worry when they call you mean things. 5 But one day, they will give account of their lives to God and it sure ain't going to pretty. 6 That is why the good news was preached to those who have already died. Since they heard the message and believed, they will share in the same things as those of us who will still be alive when Christ comes riding back.

Use What You've Got for God

7 The end of the trail is right around the corner. Keep your wits about you and pay attention to your prayers. 8 Don't ever give up on loving folks. A little bit of love covers a bunch of sin. 9 Invite folks into your bunkhouse if they need a cup of coffee or a cot. 10 You've each been given some special abilities so use them for the good of others. 11 If you talk good, talk about God and his grace. If you're a hard worker, work hard for others and God. Do these things so God will get the glory. Amen.

More on Suffering

12 Don't wig out when you suffer for the sake of Christ. It don't mean you're doing something wrong. It means you're doing something right. 13 Be glad you get to share the same trail Jesus followed. It means you're on the right track. 14 If you get insulted because you ride for Jesus, take it as a compliment. This means God is riding with you. 15 Now, I ain't talking about suffering because you did something wrong. 16 I'm talking about suffering for doing something right. Don't be ashamed or hard on yourself. Give thanks to God for making you stronger.

17 It's time for a reckoning, and God's cowboys will be reckoned first. If we who ride for him are reckoned first, how terrible it will be for those who come after and don't believe. 18 The Good Book even says, "It's hard for a good cowboy to be saved. How much harder is it for godless sinners and no-accounts?"

19 So, if you're suffering for doing good, then that means God is on your side and will keep his promise of the reward you will get.
