Contextual Overview

1 And, straightway, early, when they had made, a council, the High-priest, with the Elders, and Scribes, and all the High-council, binding Jesus, led him away, and delivered him up unto Pilate. 2 And Pilate questioned him - Art, thou, the king of the Jews? And, he, answering him, saith - Thou, sayest. 3 And the High-priests began to accuse him, of many things. 4 And, Pilate, again, was questioning him, saying- Answerest thou, nothing? See! of how many things, they are accusing thee! 5 But, Jesus, no further, answered, anything, so that Pilate began to marvel. 6 Now, at feast time, he was wont to release unto them one prisoner, whom they were claiming. 7 And there was the so-called Barabbas, with the rebels, bound, even with them who, in the rebellion, had committed, murder. 8 And, going up, the multitude began to be claiming - according as he was wont to do for them. 9 But, Pilate, answered them, saying - Will ye, I release unto you, the King of the Jews? 10 For he was getting to know that, for envy, had the High-priestsdelivered him up.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

But the chief priests moved the people,.... Greatly solicited and persuaded them, both in person, and by their officers they employed, and dispersed among them, to make use of arguments with them to prevail upon them:

that he should rather release Barabbas unto them; than Jesus of Nazareth; choosing rather to have a murderer granted unto them, than the holy and just one. The Persic version, as before, reads, "the chief of the priests"; but they were all concerned, and were the most active men in bringing about the death of Christ; though Caiaphas was behind none of them in envy, rage, and malice;
