Psalms 74

   |

Yet God Is My King

A (FA)Maskil of Asaph.

1 Why, O God? Have You (C1)rejected us forever?
Why does Your anger (C2)smoke against the (C3)sheep of Your (F1)pasture?

2 Remember Your congregation, which You have (C1)purchased of old,
Which You have (C2)redeemed to be the (C3)tribe of Your inheritance;
And this Mount (C4)Zion, where You have dwelt.

3 Lift up Your steps toward the (C1)perpetual ruins;
The enemy (C2)has damaged everything within the sanctuary.

4 Your adversaries have (C1)roared in the midst of Your meeting place;
They have set up their (C2)own signs (C3)for signs.

5 Each seems like one who lifts up
(F1)An (C1)axe against the undergrowth of trees.

6 And now its (C1)carved work altogether
They smash with hatchet and (F1)hammers.

7 They have (C1)set Your sanctuary on fire;
By bringing it to the ground, they have (C2)defiled the dwelling place of Your name.

8 They (C1)said in their heart, "Let us (F1)completely (F2)subdue them."
They have burned all the meeting places of God in the land.

9 We do not see our (C1)signs;
There is (C2)no longer any prophet,
Nor is there any among us who knows (C3)how long.

10 How long, O God, will the adversary (C1)reproach?
Will the enemy (C2)spurn Your name forever?

11 Why (C1)do You turn back Your hand, even Your right hand?
From within Your bosom, (C2)destroy them!

12 Yet God is (C1)my King from of old,
Who works deeds of (F1)salvation in the midst of the earth.

13 You (C1)divided the sea by Your strength;
You (C2)broke the heads of the (C3)sea monsters (F1)in the waters.

14 You crushed the heads of (F1)(C1)Leviathan;
You gave him as food for the (F2)creatures (C2)of the desert.

15 (F1)You (C1)split open spring and river;
(F1)You (C2)dried up ever-flowing rivers.

16 Yours is the day, Yours also is the night;
(F1)You have (C1)established the (F2)light and the sun.

17 (F1)You have (C1)caused all the boundaries of the earth to stand firm;
(F1)You have formed (C2)summer and winter.

18 Remember this, O Yahweh, that the enemy has (C1)reproached,
And a (C2)wickedly foolish people has spurned Your name.

19 Do not deliver the soul of Your (C1)turtledove to the wild beast;
(C2)Do not forget the life of Your afflicted forever.

20 Look to the (C1)covenant;
For the (C2)dark places of the land are full of the haunts of violence.

21 Let not the (C1)oppressed return dishonored;
Let the (C2)afflicted and needy praise Your name.

22 Arise, O God, and (C1)plead Your own cause;
Remember (F1)how the (C2)wicked fool reproaches You all day long.

23 Do not forget the voice of Your (C1)adversaries,
The (C2)rumbling of those who rise against You which ascends continually.
