Hold nothing back and we won't kill you.' If this happens, tell them, ‘I presented my case to the king so that he wouldn't send me back to the dungeon of Jonathan to die there.'"

Contextual Overview

14 And Zedekiah the king sent and took Jeremiah the prophet to him, into the third entrance in the house of Jehovah. And the king said to Jeremiah, I will ask you a thing; do not hide a thing from me. 15 And Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, If I declare it to you, dying will you not cause me to die? And if I counsel you, you will not listen to me. 16 And Zedekiah the king swore secretly to Jeremiah, saying, As Jehovah lives, who made us this soul, I will not cause you to die, nor will I give you into the hand of these men who seek your life. 17 And Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, So says Jehovah, the God of Hosts, the God of Israel: If going you will go out to the rulers of the king of Babylon, then your soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire. And you and yourhouse shall live. 18 But if you will not go out to the rulers of the king of Babylon, even this city shall be given into the hands of the Chaldeans, and they will burn it with fire. And you shall not escape out of their hand. 19 And Zedekiah the king said to Jeremiah, I am afraid of the Jews who have fallen to the Chaldeans, lest they give me into their hand and they abuse me. 20 And Jeremiah said, They will not give. Please obey the voice of Jehovah which I am speaking to you, and it will be well with you and your soul will live. 21 But if you refuse to go out, this is the Word Jehovah has made me see: 22 Even, behold, all the women who are left in the house of the king of Judah shall be brought out to the rulers of the king of Babylon. And they will say, The men of your peace have seducedyou and have prevailed against you; your feethave sunk in the mire, and they turned back. 23 And they shall bring out all your wives and your sons to the Chaldeans. And you shall not escape out of their hand, but shall be seized by the hand of the king of Babylon. And this city shall be burned with fire.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

Then said Zedekiah to Jeremiah,.... Not a word signifying his approbation of the counsel given him, or that he intended to take it; his silence showed the reverse:

let no man know of these words: that had passed between them; of the conference and conversation they had had together, at least not the particulars of it; the thing itself was known, as appears by what follows, that the king and prophet had been discoursing together; but what they talked of, he desires might be concealed, pretending the prophet's good, though it was his own honour and safety he sought:

and thou shall not die; as he had promised he should not, and had sworn to it; but suggests by this, that if he disclosed the conversation, he should took upon himself free from his word and oath; so that this carried something menacing in it: or it may be rendered "that thou die not" c; intimating, that if the princes should come to the knowledge of what he had said, of the advice he had given, they would surely put him to death; and therefore, for his own safety, he desires the whole may be kept a secret.
