Contextual Overview

1 AND it came to pass when he entered the house of one of the leaders of the Pharisees to eat bread on a sabbath day, they watched him. 2 And there was a man before him, who had dropsy. 3 And Jesus answered and said to the scribes and Pharisees, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath? 4 But they kept silent. So he took him, and healed him, and let him go. 5 And he said to them, Which one of you, if his son or his ox should fall into a pit on the sabbath day, would not immediately pull and bring him out? 6 And they could not answer him concerning this.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And they could not answer him again to these things,.... The justice, equity, mercy, and humanity that appeared in our Lord's reasonings, and the cases he instanced in, being agreeable to their own tenets and practices, their mouths were shut up, and they could not return an answer to them, without being exposed,

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

See the notes at Matthew 12:11.

Which of you ... - In this way Jesus refuted the notion of the Pharisees. If it was lawful to save an ox on the Sabbath, it was also to save the life of a man. To this the Jews had nothing to answer.
