THE MESSAGE
In the eleventh year, on the first day of the third month, God 's Message came to me: "Son of man, tell Pharaoh king of Egypt, that pompous old goat: "‘Who do you, astride the world, think you really are? Look! Assyria was a Big Tree, huge as a Lebanon cedar, beautiful limbs offering cool shade, Skyscraper high, piercing the clouds. The waters gave it drink, the primordial deep lifted it high, Gushing out rivers around the place where it was planted, And then branching out in streams to all the trees in the forest. It was immense, dwarfing all the trees in the forest— Thick boughs, long limbs, roots delving deep into earth's waters. All the birds of the air nested in its boughs. All the wild animals gave birth under its branches. All the mighty nations lived in its shade. It was stunning in its majesty— the reach of its branches! the depth of its water-seeking roots! Not a cedar in God's garden came close to it. No pine tree was anything like it. Mighty oaks looked like bushes growing alongside it. Not a tree in God's garden was in the same class of beauty. I made it beautiful, a work of art in limbs and leaves, The envy of every tree in Eden, every last tree in God's garden.'"

Contextual Overview

1 Moreouer, in the eleuenth yere, the first day of ye third moneth, the worde of the Lord came vnto me, saying, 2 Thou sonne of man, speake vnto Pharao king of Egypt, and to all his people: whom art thou lyke in thy greatnesse? 3 Behold, Assur is a Cedar in Libanon, with faire braunches, and with thycke shadowing bowes, of a hygh stature, & his top was among the thicke bowes. 4 The waters made him great, and the deepe set him vp on hye, with her riuers running rounde about his plantes, and sent out her litle riuers vnto all the trees of the fielde. 5 Therefore was he higher then all the trees of the fielde, and his bowes were multiplied, & his braunches were long, because of the multitude of the waters, which the deepe sent out. 6 Al foules of the aire made their nestes in his braunches, vnder his bowes did all the beastes of the fielde bring foorth their young, and vnder his shadowe dwelt all mightie nations. 7 Beautiful was he in his greatnesse, and in the length of his braunches: for his roote stoode beside great waters. 8 No Cedar tree might hyde hym in the garden of God, there was no fyrre trees like his braunches, the chestnut trees were not like the bowes of him: all the trees in the garden of God, might not be compared vnto him in his beautie. 9 I made him faire with the multitude of his braunches: insomuch that all the trees in the pleasaunt garden of God had enuie at hym.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And it came to pass in the eleventh year,.... Of Zedekiah's reign, and Jeconiah's captivity:

in the third month, in the first day of the month: the month Sivan, which began on the twentieth of our May, and answers to part of May, and part of June; this was about seven weeks after the former prophecy, and about five weeks before the destruction of Jerusalem; according to Bishop Usher n, this was on the nineteenth of June, on the first day of the week, in 3416 A.M. or before Christ 588:

that the word of the Lord came unto me, saying; as follows:

n Annales Vet. Test. A. M. 3416.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

In the third month - More than a month before Jerusalem was taken (compare Jeremiah 39:2).

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

CHAPTER XXXI

This very beautiful chapter relates also to Egypt. The prophet

describes to Pharaoh the fall of the king of Nineveh, (see the

books of Nahum, Jonah, and Zephaniah,) under the image of a

fair cedar of Lebanon, once exceedingly tall, flourishing, and

majestic, but now cut down and withered, with its broken

branches strewed around, 1-17.

He then concludes with bringing the matter home to the king of

Egypt, by telling him that this was a picture of his

approaching fate, 18.

The beautiful cedar of Lebanon, remarkable for its loftiness,

and in the most flourishing condition, but afterwards cut down

and deserted, gives a very lately painting of the great glory

and dreadful catastrophe of both the Assyrian and Egyptian

monarchies. The manner in which the prophet has embellished his

subject is deeply interesting; the colouring is of that kind

which the mind will always contemplate with pleasure.

NOTES ON CHAP. XXXI
