Contextual Overview

21 And David came to the two hundred men, who because of weariness had not gone with him, but were waiting at the stream Besor: and they went out, meeting David and the people who were with him; and when they came near them, they said, How are you? 22 Then the bad and good-for-nothing men among those who went with David said, Because they did not go with us, we will give them nothing of the goods which we have got back, but only to every man his wife and children, so that he may take them and go. 23 Then David said, You are not to do this, my brothers, after what the Lord has given us, who has kept us safe and given up the band which came against us into our hands. 24 Who is going to give any attention to you in this question? for an equal part will be given to him who went to the fight and to him who was waiting by the goods: they are all to have the same. 25 And so he made it a rule and an order for Israel from that day till now. 26 And when David came to Ziklag, he sent some of the goods to the responsible men of Judah, and to his friends, saying, Here is an offering for you from the goods of those who were fighting against the Lord; 27 He sent to those who were in Beth-el, and in Ramah of the South, and in Jattir; 28 And to those in Arara and Eshtemoa 29 and Carmel and in the towns of the Jerahmeelites, and in the towns of the Kenites; 30 And to those who were in Hormah and in Bor-ashan and in Athach;

Bethel: Probably not the celebrated city of this name, but Bethul a city of Simeon - Joshua 19:4, supposed to be the same as Bethelia, mentioned by Sozomen as belonging to Gaza, well peopled, and having several temples remarkable for their structure and antiquity; and which Jerome says, in his life of Hilarion, was five short days' journey from Pelusium. Genesis 28:19, Joshua 16:2, Judges 1:22, Judges 1:23, 1 Kings 12:29

south Ramoth: A city of Simeon; so called to distinguish it from Ramoth Gilead beyond Jordan. Joshua 19:8, Ramath

Gill's Notes on the Bible

To [them] which [were] in Bethel,.... One part of the spoil was sent to them; not to those in Bethel, in the tribe of Benjamin, but in Kirjathjearim, called Bethel, or the house of God, because the ark was there, see 1 Samuel 7:1; moreover, this place was also called Baalah, which some think is referred to here, see Joshua 15:9;

and to [them] which [were] in south Ramoth; a city of the tribe of Simeon, which lay within the lot of Judah; of which see Joshua 19:8;

and to [them] which [were] in Jattir; a city of the tribe of Judah,

Joshua 19:8- :.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Bethel - i. e. Bethuel 1 Chronicles 4:30, quite in the south near Beer-sheba, Hormah, and Ziklag; or Bethul Joshua 19:4, one of the cities of the Simeonites.

South Ramoth - Rather, “Ramoth of the South country” 1 Samuel 27:10; 1Sa 30:1, 1 Samuel 30:14, so-called to distinguish it from Ramoth-Gilead, one of the Simeonite cities Joshua 19:8. Shimei, the Ramathite 1 Chronicles 27:27, who was over David’s vineyards, was evidently a native of this Ramath. See below 1 Samuel 30:28.

Jattir - “In the mountains” of Judah, and one of the priests’ cities, is identified with ‘Attir, ten miles south of Hebron.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse 1 Samuel 30:27. To them which were in Beth-el — This was in the tribe of Ephraim.

South Ramoth — So called to distinguish it from Ramoth Gilead, beyond Jordan. This Ramoth belonged to the tribe of Simeon, Joshua 19:8.

In Jattir — Supposed by Calmet to be the same as Ether, Joshua 15:42, but more probably Jattir, Joshua 15:48. It was situated in the mountains, and belonged to Judah.
