Cross-References
Now the serpent was more crafty (subtle, skilled in deceit) than any living creature of the field which the LORD God had made. And the serpent (Satan) said to the woman, "Can it really be that God has said, 'You shall not eat from any tree of the garden'?"
"And I will put enmity (open hostility) Between you and the woman, And between your seed (offspring) and her Seed; He shall [fatally] bruise your head, And you shall [only] bruise His heel."
The man named his wife Eve (life spring, life giver), because she was the mother of all the living.
"Whoever sheds man's blood [unlawfully], By man (judicial government) shall his blood be shed, For in the image of God He made man.
'You are therefore to make a distinction between the [ceremonially] clean animal and the unclean, and between the unclean bird and the clean; and you shall not make yourselves detestable by animal or by bird or by anything that crawls on the ground, which I have set apart from you as unclean.
The nomads of the desert will bow before him, And his enemies will lick the dust.
Then you [Jerusalem] will be brought low, You will speak from the earth, And from the dust where you lie face down Your muffled words will come. Your voice will also be like that of a spirit from the earth [like one produced by a medium], And your speech will whisper and squeak from the dust.
"The wolf and the lamb will graze together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox [there will no longer be predator and prey]; and dust will be the serpent's food. They will do no evil or harm in all My holy mountain (Zion)," says the LORD.
They shall lick the dust like a serpent; Like crawling things of the earth They shall come trembling out of their fortresses and hiding places. They shall turn and come with fear and dread to the LORD our God And they shall be afraid and stand in awe before You [O LORD].
Gill's Notes on the Bible
Sing, O daughter of Zion,.... The congregation of Zion, as the Targum; the church of Christ in Gospel times, which has great reason to sing and rejoice, because of the coming of Christ, redemption by him, and all other benefits and blessings of grace; because of the Gospel, and the ordinances of it, and the numbers of souls converted, both among Jews and Gentiles; especially the church in the latter day is here called upon to sing for joy, when the Jews will be converted; to which these words and what follow relate:
shout, O Israel; the ten tribes, as Kimchi and Ben Melech interpret it; which shall now return, and all Israel shall be saved,
Romans 11:26 and therefore just cause of shouting, and of keeping a jubilee on that account:
be glad and rejoice with all the heart, O daughter of Jerusalem; the metropolis of the two tribes; for now the children of Israel and of Judah shall be together, and seek the Lord their God, and the true Messiah, and find him; and shall embrace him, profess and serve him; which will be matter of great joy; and this will be sincere and hearty, and devoid of all hypocrisy. Several terms are used, describing the people of the Jews, to comprehend them all; and several words to express their joy, in order to set forth the greatness of it, as their happy case would require; as follows:
Barnes' Notes on the Bible
Sing, O daughter of Sion; shout, O Israel; be glad and rejoice with all the heart, O daughter of Jerusalem - Very remarkable throughout all these verses is the use of the sacred number three, secretly conveying to the thoughtful soul the thought of Him, Father Son and Holy Spirit, the Holy and Undivided Trinity by whose operation these things shall be. Threefold is the description of their being freed from sins:
(1) they shall ânot do iniquity,â
(2) ânor speak lies,â
(3) âneither shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth.â
Threefold their blessedness; They shall:
(1) âfeed,â
(2) âlie down,â
(3) ânone make them afraid.â
Threefold the exhortation to joy here. (Rup.): âSing to God the Father; âshoutâ to God the Son; âbe glad and rejoiceâ in God the Holy Spirit, which Holy Trinity is One God, from whom thou hast received it that thou art:
(1) âthe daughter of Zionâ
(2) âIsraelâ
(3) âthe daughter of Jerusalemâ
âThe daughter of Zionâ by faith, âIsraelâ by hope, âJerusalemâ by charity.â And this hidden teaching of that holy mystery is continued; âThe Lord,â God the Father, âhath taken away thy judgments; He Godâ the Son, âhath cast out (cleared quite away) thine enemy; the king of Israel, the Lord,â the Holy Spirit, âis in the midst of thee!â Zephaniah 3:15. The promise is threefold:
(1) âthou shalt not see evil anymoreâ
(2) âfear thou notâ
(3) âlet not thine hands be slackâ
The love of God is threefold:
(1) âHe will rejoice over thee with joyâ
(2) âHe will rest in His loveâ
(3) âHe will joy over thee with singingâ
Again the words in these four verses are so framed as to be âfulâ- filled in the end. All in this life are but shadows of that fullness. First, whether the Church or the faithful soul, she is summoned by all her names, âdaughter of Zionâ (âthe thirstyâ athirst for God) âIsraelâ (âPrince with Godâ) âJerusalemâ (âCity of Peaceâ). By all she is called to the fullest joy in God with every expression and every feeling. âSing;â it is the inarticulate, thrilling, trembling burst of joy; âshout;â again the inarticulate yet louder swell of joy, a trumpet-blast; and then too, deep within, âbe glad,â the calm even joy of the inward soul; âexult,â the triumph of the soul which cannot contain itself for joy; and this, âwith the whole heart,â no corner of it not pervaded with joy. The ground of this is the complete removal of every evil, and the full presence of God.
Clarke's Notes on the Bible
Verse Zephaniah 3:14. Sing, O daughter of Zion — Here is not only a gracious prophetic promise of their restoration from captivity, but of their conversion to God through Christ.
