Psalms 81
God's Goodness and Israel's Waywardness.
1 (C1)Sing aloud to God our (C2)strength;
Shout for (C3)joy to the (C4)God of Jacob (Israel).
2 Raise a song, sound (C1)the timbrel,
The sweet sounding (C2)lyre with the (C3)harp.
3 Blow the trumpet at the (C1)New Moon,
At the (F1)full moon, on our (C2)feast day.
4 For this is a statute for Israel,
An ordinance of the God of Jacob.
5 He established it for a testimony in (F1)Joseph
When He (C1)went throughout the land of Egypt.
I heard the (C2)language of One whom I did not know, saying,
6 "I (C1)removed the burden from his shoulder;
His hands were freed from the basket.
7 "You (C1)called in the time of trouble and I rescued you;
I (C2)answered you in the secret place of thunder;
I tested you at the (C3)waters of Meribah. (VR1) Selah.
8 "(C1)Hear, O My people, and I will admonish you—
O Israel, if you (C2)would listen to Me!
9 "Let there be no (C1)strange god among you,
Nor shall you worship any foreign god.
10 "(C1)I am the LORD your God,
Who brought you up from the land of Egypt.
(C2)Open your mouth wide and I will (C3)fill it.
11 "But My people (C1)would not listen to My voice,
And Israel did not consent to obey Me.
12 "So I (C1)gave them up to the stubbornness of their heart,
To walk in the path of their own counsel. (VR1)
13 "Oh, that My people (C1)would listen to Me,
That Israel would (C2)walk in My ways!
14 "Then I would quickly (C1)subdue and humble their enemies
And (C2)turn My hand against their adversaries;
15 (C1)Those who hate the LORD would (C2)pretend obedience to Him and cringe before Him,
And their time of punishment would be forever.
16 "But I would feed Israel with the (C1)finest of the wheat;
And with (C2)honey from the rock I would satisfy you."
