Contextual Overview

1Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour (3:00 p.m.), 2and a man who had been unable to walk from birth was being carried along, whom they used to set down every day at that gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, so that he could beg alms from those entering the temple. 3So when he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple, he began asking [them] for coins.4But Peter, along with John, stared at him intently and said, "Look at us!" 5And the man began to pay attention to them, eagerly expecting to receive something from them. 6But Peter said, "Silver and gold I do not have; but what I do have I give to you: In the name (authority, power) of Jesus Christ the Nazarene—[begin now to] walk and go on walking!" 7Then he seized the man's right hand with a firm grip and raised him up. And at once his feet and ankles became strong and steady, 8and with a leap he stood up and began to walk; and he went into the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. 9All the people saw him walking and praising God; 10and they recognized him as the very man who usually sat begging for coins at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, and they were filled with wonder and amazement and were mystified at what had happened to him.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

Who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple,.... Just as they were entering through the gate at which he lay, he looked at them; and though they were strangers to him, he concluded they were Israelites by their going into the temple at that time:

asked an alms; of them; prayed them to give him something for his relief and support.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Who, seeing Peter ... - There is no evidence that he was acquainted with them or knew who they were. He asked of them as he was accustomed to do of the multitude that entered the temple.
