Jerusalem Is Taken

1 And it comes to pass, in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, on the tenth of the month, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has come, he and all his force, against Jerusalem, and encamps against it, and builds a surrounding fortification against it.1-7 The revolt dates from the ninth year and tenth month of Zedekiah's reign. Nebuchadnezzar set out for Jerusalem immediately with a full army. He set up camp and sealed off the city by building siege mounds around it. The city was under siege for nineteen months (until the eleventh year of Zedekiah). By the fourth month of Zedekiah's eleventh year, on the ninth day of the month, the famine was so bad that there wasn't so much as a crumb of bread for anyone. Then there was a breakthrough. At night, under cover of darkness, the entire army escaped through an opening in the wall (it was the gate between the two walls above the King's Garden). They slipped through the lines of the Babylonians who surrounded the city and headed for the Jordan on the Arabah Valley road. But the Babylonians were in pursuit of the king and they caught up with him in the Plains of Jericho. By then Zedekiah's army had deserted and was scattered. The Babylonians took Zedekiah prisoner and marched him off to the king of Babylon at Riblah, then tried and sentenced him on the spot. Zedekiah's sons were executed right before his eyes; the summary murder of his sons was the last thing he saw, for they then blinded him. Securely handcuffed, he was hauled off to Babylon.

Nebuchadnezzar Besieges Jerusalem

1 (C1)Now in the ninth year of his reign, on the tenth day of the tenth month, (C2)Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came, he and all his army, against Jerusalem, camped against it and (C3)built a siege wall all around (F1)it.2 The city was under siege until King Zedekiah’s eleventh year.

3 On the ninth of the [fourth] month the famine prevailed in the city, and there was no bread for the people of the land. 3 The famine was getting worse and worse in the city. By the 9th day of the fourth month, there was no more food for the common people in the city.3 And in the eleventh year of King Zedekiah, on the ninth day of the fifth month, the famine was severe in the city and there was no bread for the people of the land. 3 On the ninth day of the fourth month[a] of that same year, when the famine was so bad that the people had nothing left to eat, 3 In the ninth month, the famine became severe in the city, and there was no food for the people of the land. 3 on the ninth of the month, when the famine was severe in the city, and there was no bread for the people of the land,3 But on ye nyenth daye of the fourth moneth was the honger so stronge in the cite, that the people of the londe had nothinge to eate. 3 On the ninth day of the fourth month the famine was sore in the city, so that there was no bread for the people of the land. 3 Now on the ninth day of the fourth month, the store of food in the town was almost gone, so that there was no food for the people of the land.3 And the ninth day of the moneth, there was so great hunger in the citie, that there was no bread for the people of the lande.3 On the ninth day of the [fourth] month the famine was sore in the city, so that there was no bread for the people of the land.3 And on the ninth day of the fourth moneth, the famine preuailed in the city, and there was no bread for the people of the land. 3 And the famine prevailed in the city, and there was no bread for the people of the land. 3 On the ninth day of the [fourth] month the famine was sore in the city, so that there was no bread for the people of the land. 3 in the nynthe day of the monethe; and hungur `hadde maistrie in the citee, and `breed was not to the puple of the lond.3 On the ninth day of the [fourth] month the famine was intense in the city, so that there was no bread for the people of the land.3 And on the ninth [day] of the [fourth] month the famine prevailed in the city, and there was no bread for the people of the land.3 By the ninth day of the fourth month the famine had become so severe in the city that there was no food for the people of the land.

3 By July 18 in the eleventh year of Zedekiah's reign,[b] the famine in the city had become very severe, and the last of the food was entirely gone. 3 On the ninth day of the fourth month, there was no food left in the city. There was no more food for the people of the land. 3 On the ninth day of the fourth month the famine became so severe in the city that there was no food for the people of the land. 3 On the ninth of the month, when the famine had become severe in the city, - and there had come to be no bread for the people of the land,3 The ninth day of the month: and a famine prevailed in the city, and there was no bread for the people of the land.3 On the ninth day of the fourth month the famine was so severe in the city that there was no food for the people of the land.3 on the ninth of the month -- when the famine is severe in the city, and there hath not been bread for the people of the land,3 On the ninth of the month, when the famine is severe in the city, then there has not been bread for the people of the land.3 On the ninth day of the fourth month (C1)the famine was so severe in the city that there was no food for the people of the land.4 Then the city was broken into,(C1) and all the warriors fled(C2) at night by way of the city gate between the two walls near the king’s garden,(C3) even though the Chaldeans surrounded the city. As the king made his way along the route to the Arabah,(C4) 4 Then a breach was made in the city, and all the men of war [fled] by night by the way of the gate between the two walls, which was by the king's garden (now the Kasdim were against the city round about); and [the king] went by the way of the `Aravah.

4 And the city was broken up, and all the men of war fled by night by the way of the gate between two walls, which is by the king's garden: (now the Chaldees were against the city round about:) and the king went the way toward the plain. 4 Then a breach was made in the city, and all the men of war fled by night by the way of the gate between the two walls, by (e)the king's garden, and (f)the Chaldeans were around the city. And they went in the direction of the (g)Arabah. 4 Then the city was broken into, and the whole army ran away at night through the gate between the two walls by the king's garden. While the Babylonians were still surrounding the city, Zedekiah and his men ran away toward the Jordan Valley. 4 The enemy broke through the city walls, and all the soldiers tried to escape. They left the city during the night. They went through the gate between the two walls that is near the king's garden. (The Babylonians were all around the city.) Then they headed for the Jordan Valley. 4 (C1)Then the city wall was broken into and conquered; all the men of war fled by night by way of the gate between the two walls by (C2)the king's garden, though the (F1)Chaldeans (Babylonians) were all around the city. And they went by way of the Arabah (the plain of the Jordan).4 (C1)Then the city was broken into, and all the men of war fled by night by way of the gate between the two walls that were beside (C2)the king's garden, though the Chaldeans were all around the city. And (F1)they went by way of the Arabah.4 Then a breach was made in the city, and all the men of war [fled] by night by the way of the gate between the two walls, which was by the king's garden (now the Chaldeans were against the city round about); and [the king] went by the way of the Arabah. 4 Then the citie was broken vp, and all the men of warre fled by night, by the way of the gate, which is betweene two walles that was by the Kings garden: nowe the Caldees were by the citie round about: and the King went by the way of the wildernesse.4 (C1)Then the city was broken into, and all the men of war fled by night by way of the gate between the two walls beside (C2)the king's garden, though the Chaldeans were all around the city. And (F1)they went by way of the Arabah.4 Then the city was breached; and though the Chaldeans(a) had surrounded the city, all the men of war fled by night by way of the gate between the two walls near the king’s garden. They fled toward the Arabah(a), 4 the Babylonian troops broke through the city wall.[c] That same night, Zedekiah and his soldiers tried to escape through the gate near the royal garden, even though they knew the enemy had the city surrounded. They headed toward the desert, 4 they broke through into the city. All the soldiers [fled] by night through the gate between the two walls, near the king's garden. Because the Kasdim were surrounding the city, the king took the route through the ‘Aravah.

4 And the city was broken into; and all the men of war [fled] by night, by the way of the gate between the two walls, which [leads] to the king's garden (now the Chaldeans were by the city round about); and they went the way toward the plain.

4 Nebuchadnezzar's army finally broke through the city wall. That night King Zedekiah and all his soldiers ran away. They used the secret gate that went through the double walls. It was by the king's garden. The enemy soldiers were all around the city, but Zedekiah and his men escaped on the road to the desert.4 And the city was breached, and all the men of war fled by night by the way of the gate between the two walls, which is by the kings garden (now the Chaldeans were round about the city), and they went by the way of the plain. 4 (c)the city walls were broken through. Although the Babylonians were surrounding the city, all the soldiers escaped during the night. They left by way of the royal garden, went through the gateway connecting the two walls, and fled in the direction of the Jordan Valley. 4 Then the city was breached, and all of the men of war entered by night by way of the gate between the wall which was by the garden of the king, and the Chaldeans were against the city all around, so he[a] left by the way of the Arabah. 4 then the city was broken up, and by night all the men of war went by way of the gate, between the two walls by the king's garden; and the Chaldeans were against the city all around; and the king went the way toward the Arabah.4 And the cite was broken vp, & all the men of warre fled in the night by the waye of the porte betwene the two walles, which goeth to the kynges garde. But the Caldees laye aboute the cite. And he fled by the waye to the playne felde. 4 Then a breach was made in the city, and all the men of war fled by night by the way of the gate between the two walls, which was by the king's garden (now the Chaldeans were against the city round about); and the king went by the way of the Arabah. 4 So an opening was made in the wall of the town, and all the men of war went in flight by night through the doorway between the two walls which was by the king's garden; (now the Chaldaeans were stationed round the town:) and the king went by the way of the Arabah.4 And the citie was broken vp, and all the men of armes [fled] by night by a way through a gate [which is] betweene two walles by the kinges garden (the Chaldees lying about the citie:) And the king went the way toward the playne.4 Then a breach was made in the city, and all the men of war [fled] by night by the way of the gate between the two walls, which was by the king's garden--now the Chaldeans were against the city round about--and the king went by the way of the Arabah.4 And the citie was broken vp, and all the men of warre fled by night, by the way of the gate, betweene two walles, which is by the kings garden, (now the Caldees were against the citie round about) and the King went the way toward the plaine. 4 And the city was broken up, and all the men of war went forth by night, by the way of the gate between the walls, this is the gate of the king’s garden: and the Chaldeans were set against the city round about: and the king went by the way of the plain. 4 Then a breach was made in the city, and all the men of war [fled] by night by the way of the gate between the two walls, which was by the king’s garden: (now the Chaldeans were against the city round about:) and [the king] went by the way of the Arabah. 4 And the citee was brokun, and alle men werriours fledden in the niyt bi the weie of the yate, which is bitwixe the double wal, to the gardyn of the kyng; sotheli Caldeis bisegiden the citee `bi cumpas. Therfor Sedechie fledde bi the weie that ledith to the feeldi placis of the wildirnesse;4 Then a breach was made in the city, and all the men of war [fled] by night by the way of the gate between the two walls, which was by the king's garden, while the Chaldeans were against the city all around; and [the king] went by the way of the Arabah.4 And the city was broken up, and all the men of war [fled] by night by the way of the gate between two walls, which [is] by the king's garden: (now the Chaldees [were] against the city on all sides:) and [the king] went the way towards the plain.4 Then the city wall was broken through, and all the men of war fled at night by way of the gate between two walls, which was by the king's garden, even though the Chaldeans were still encamped all around against the city. And the king [fn] went by way of the plain. [fn] 4 Then a section of the city wall was broken down. Since the city was surrounded by the Babylonians,[c] the soldiers waited for nightfall and escaped[d] through the gate between the two walls behind the king's garden. Then they headed toward the Jordan Valley.[e] 4 Then the city was broken into. All the men of war ran away during the night between the two walls beside the king's garden. The Babylonians were all around the city, but the men left by the way of the Arabah. 4 Then a breach was made in the city wall;[a] the king with all the soldiers fled[b] by night by the way of the gate between the two walls, by the king's garden, though the Chaldeans were all around the city. They went in the direction of the Arabah. 4 then was the city broken up, and all the men of war fled by night by way of the gate between the two walls, which is by the garden of the king, the Chaldeans being near the city round about, - and he went the way of the Waste Plain;4 And a breach was made into the city: and all the men of war fled in the night between the two walls by the king’s garden (now the Chaldees besieged the city round about), and Sedecias fled by the way that leadeth to the plains of the wilderness.4 Then a breach was made in the city; the king with all the men of war fled by night by the way of the gate between the two walls, by the king's garden, though the Chalde'ans were around the city. And they went in the direction of the Arabah.4 then the city is broken up, and all the men of war [go] by night the way of the gate, between the two walls that [are] by the garden of the king, and the Chaldeans [are] against the city round about, and [the king] goeth the way of the plain.4 And the city is broken up, and all the men of war [go] by night the way of the gate, between the two walls that [are] by the garden of the king, and the Chaldeans [are] against the city all around, and [the king] goes the way of the plain.4 (C1)Then the city was broken into, and all the men of war fled by night by way of the gate between the two walls beside (C2)the king's garden, though the Chaldeans were all around the city. And (F1)they went by way of the Arabah.5 the Chaldean army pursued him and overtook him in the plains of Jericho. Zedekiah’s entire army left him and scattered.(C1) 5 But the army of the Kasdim pursued after the king, and overtook him in the plains of Yericho; and all his army was scattered from him.
