Sennacherib’s Invasion

¹ After these faithful deeds, King Sennacherib of Assyria came and entered Judah. He laid siege to the fortified cities and intended^(F1) to break into them.^(C1)

¹ After these things, and this faithfulness, Sancheriv king of Ashshur came, and entered into Yehudah, and encamped against the fortified cities, and thought to win them for himself.

¹ After Hezekiah did all these things to serve the Lord, Sennacherib king of Assyria came and attacked Judah. He and his army surrounded and attacked the strong, walled cities, hoping to take them for himself.

¹ After King Hezekiah had faithfully obeyed the Lord's instructions by doing these things, King Sennacherib of Assyria invaded Judah. He attacked the fortified cities and thought he would capture every one of them.

¹ After these events and this faithfulness of [Hizkiyahu's], Sancheriv king of Ashur came, invaded Y'hudah and besieged the fortified cities, thinking that he would break in [and capture] them.

¹ After these things and this faithfulness, Sennacherib king of Assyria came and entered into Judah, and encamped against the fortified cities, and thought to break into them.

The King of Assyria Attacks Judah

¹ After Hezekiah had faithfully done everything the Lord commanded, King Sennacherib of Assyria came to attack the country of Judah. Sennacherib and his army camped outside the fortresses. He did this so that he could make plans to defeat these towns. Sennacherib wanted to win them for himself.

¹ AFTER these things and the faithful acts which Hezekiah did, Sennacherib king of Assyria came and invaded Judah and encamped against the fortified cities, and said to their inhabitants, Give me a pledge and come to me.

The Assyrians Threaten Jerusalem^(a)

¹ After these events, in which King Hezekiah served the Lord faithfully, Sennacherib, the emperor of Assyria, invaded Judah. He besieged the fortified cities and gave orders for his army to break their way through the walls.

¹ After these things and these acts of faithfulness, Sennacherib the king of Assyria came, and he came against Judah. And he encamped against the fortified cities and planned to break them down for himself.

¹ After these actes and faithfulnes came Sennacharib the kynge of Assur, and wente in to Iuda, and pitched before the stroge cities, and thoughte to plucke them vnto him.

¹ Now after these things and this true-hearted work, Sennacherib, king of Assyria, came into Judah, and put his army in position before the walled towns of Judah, designing to make his way into them by force.

¹ After these things and this truth, come hath Sennacherib king of Asshur, yea, he cometh in to Judah, and encampeth against the cities of the bulwarks, and saith to rend them unto himself.

¹ After these things and this truth, Sennacherib king of Asshur has come, indeed, he comes to Judah, and encamps against the cities of the bulwarks, and says to break into them himself.

¹ And then, after this exemplary track record, this: Sennacherib king of Assyria came and attacked Judah. He put the fortified cities under siege, determined to take them.

² And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib was come, and that he was purposed to fight against Jerusalem, ² And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come and intended to fight against Jerusalem, ² Hezekiah knew that Sennacherib had come to Jerusalem to attack it. ² When Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had invaded and intended to attack Jerusalem, ² When Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come and that he intended to go to war against Jerusalem,² Now when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come and that ^(F1)he intended to wage war against Jerusalem,² When Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib was come, and that he was purposed to fight against Jerusalem, ² When Hezekiah sawe that Saneherib was come, and that his purpose was to fight against Ierusalem,² Then Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come and that he had set his face to make war on Jerusalem,² When Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come to make war against Jerusalem,

² As soon as Hezekiah learned that Sennacherib was planning to attack Jerusalem, ² When Hizkiyahu saw that Sancheriv had come and intended to attack Yerushalayim,

² And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib was come, and that he was minded to fight against Jerusalem, ² Hezekiah knew that Sennacherib came to Jerusalem to attack it.² And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib king of Assyria and his armies had come to fight against Jerusalem, ² When Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib intended to attack Jerusalem also, ² When Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come and that his face was set for battle against Jerusalem, ² And Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come, and his face was set to battle against Jerusalem;² And whan Ezechias sawe that Sennacherib came, and that his face stode to fighte agaynst Ierusalem, ² And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib was come, and that ^[b]he was purposed to fight against Jerusalem, ² And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come for the purpose of fighting against Jerusalem,² And so when Hezekia sawe that Sennacherib was come, and that he was purposed to fight against Hierusalem,² And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib was come, and that he was purposed to fight against Jerusalem,² And when Hezekiah sawe that Sennacherib was come, and that hee was purposed to fight against Ierusalem, ² And Ezekias saw that Sennacherim was come, and that his face was set to fight against Jerusalem. ² And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib was come, and that he was purposed to fight against Jerusalem, ² And whanne Ezechie hadde herd this thing, that is, that Senacherib was comun, and that al the fersnesse of batel was turned ayens Jerusalem,² And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib came, and that he was purposed to fight against Jerusalem,² And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come, and that he purposed to fight against Jerusalem,² And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come, and that his purpose was to make war against Jerusalem, ² When Hezekiah realized that Sennacherib also intended to attack Jerusalem, ² When Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come to fight against Jerusalem, ² When Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come and intended to fight against Jerusalem, ² And, when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come, - and that, his face, was - to war, against Jerusalem,² And when Ezechias saw that Sennacherib was come, and that he was purposed to fight against Jerusalem,² And when Hezeki'ah saw that Sennach'erib had come and intended to fight against Jerusalem,² And Hezekiah seeth that Sennacherib hath come, and his face [is] to the battle against Jerusalem,² And Hezekiah sees that Sennacherib has come, and his face [is] to the battle against Jerusalem,^2-4 When Hezekiah realized that Sennacherib's strategy was to take Jerusalem, he talked to his advisors and military leaders about eliminating all the water supplies outside the city; they thought it was a good idea. There was a great turnout of people to plug the springs and tear down the aqueduct. They said, "Why should the kings of Assyria march in and be furnished with running water?"² Now when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come and that ^(F1)he intended to make war on Jerusalem,³ so he consulted with his officials and his warriors about stopping up the water of the springs that were outside the city, and they helped him. ³ he took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the springs which were outside of the city; and they helped him.

³ He took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were without the city: and they did help him. ³ he planned with his officers and his mighty men to stop the water of the springs that were outside the city; and they helped him. ³ So Hezekiah and his officers and army commanders decided to cut off the water from the springs outside the city. So the officers and commanders helped Hezekiah. ³ he consulted with his advisers and military officers about stopping up the springs outside the city, and they supported him. ³ he decided, together with his officers and his soldiers, to stop up the water supply from the springs which were outside the city by enclosing them with masonry and concealing them, and they helped him.³ he decided with his officers and his warriors to cut off the supply of water from the springs which were outside the city, and they helped him.³ he took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the springs which were outside of the city; and they helped him. ³ Then he tooke counsell with his princes and his nobles, to stoppe the water of the fountaines without the citie: and they did helpe him.³ and he took counsel with his commanders and his warriors to stop up the supply of water from the springs which were outside the city, and they helped him.³ he consulted with his leaders and commanders about stopping up the waters of the springs outside the city, and they helped him carry it out.^3-4 he and his officials worked out a plan to cut off the supply of water outside the city, so that the Assyrians would have no water when they came to attack. The officials got together a large work force that stopped up the springs and streams near Jerusalem. ³ he consulted his leading men and military advisers about sealing off the water in the springs outside the city. After gaining their support,

³ he took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the fountains of waters that were outside the city; and they helped him. ³ Then Hezekiah talked to his officials and army officers. They all agreed to stop the waters of the water springs outside the city. The officials and army officers helped Hezekiah.³ He took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to conceal the waters of the fountains which were outside the city; and they did help him.^3-4 he and his officials decided to cut off the supply of water outside the city in order to keep the Assyrians from having any water when they got near Jerusalem. The officials led a large number of people out and stopped up all the springs, so that no more water flowed out of them. ³ he took counsel with his commanders and his mighty warriors to block off the waters of the springs that came from outside the city, and they helped him. ³ and he took counsel with his leaders and his mighty ones, to stop the waters of the fountains that were on the outside of the city; and they helped him.³ he deuysed with his rulers and mightie men, to couer the waters of the welles that were without the cite, and they helped him: ³ he took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were without the city; and they helped him. ³ He took up with his rulers and men of war the question of stopping up the water-springs outside the town; and they gave him their support.³ He toke counsell with his lordes and men of might, to stop the water of the fountaynes without the citie: And they dyd helpe him.³ he took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were without the city; and they helped him.³ He tooke counsel with his princes, and his mightie men, to stop the waters of the fountaines, which were without the citie: and they did helpe him. ³ And he took counsel with his elders and his mighty men to stop the wells of water which were without the city: and they helped him. ³ he took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were without the city; and they helped him. ³ he took counsel with the princes and strongest men, that thei schulden stoppe the heedis of wellis, that weren without the citee; and whanne the sentence of alle men demyde this,³ he took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were outside the city; and they helped him.³ He took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which [were] without the city: and they helped him.³ he consulted with his leaders and commanders [fn] to stop the water from the springs which were outside the city; and they helped him. ³ he consulted with his officials and military advisers, and they decided to stop the flow of the springs outside the city. ³ he planned with his captains and men of war to stop the water from the wells which were outside the city. And they helped him. ³ he planned with his officers and his warriors to stop the flow of the springs that were outside the city; and they helped him. ³ he took counsel with his captains and his heroes, to stop the waters of the fountains, which were outside the city, - -and they helped him.³ He took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were without the city: and they did help him.³ he planned with his officers and his mighty men to stop the water of the springs that were outside the city; and they helped him.³ and he taketh counsel with his heads and his mighty ones, to stop the waters of the fountains that [are] at the outside of the city -- and they help him,³ and he takes counsel with his heads and his mighty ones, to stop the waters of the fountains that [are] at the outside of the city—and they help him,³ he decided with his officers and his warriors to cut off the supply of water from the springs which were outside the city, and they helped him.⁴ Many people gathered and stopped up all the springs^(C1) and the stream that flowed through the land;^(C2) they said, “Why should the kings of Assyria come and find abundant water?” ⁴ So there was gathered much people together, and they stopped all the springs, and the brook that flowed through the midst of the land, saying, Why should the kings of Ashshur come, and find much water?

⁴ So there was gathered much people together, who stopped all the fountains, and the brook that ran through the midst of the land, saying, Why should the kings of Assyria come, and find much water? ⁴ A great many people were gathered, and they stopped all the springs and ^(b)the brook that flowed through the land, saying, "Why should the kings of Assyria come and find much water?" ⁴ Many people came and cut off all the springs and the stream that flowed through the land. They said, "The king of Assyria will not find much water when he comes here." ⁴ A large number of people gathered together and stopped up all the springs and the stream that flowed through the district. They reasoned, "Why should the kings of Assyria come and find plenty of water?" ⁴ So many people came together, ^(C1)and they stopped up all the springs and ^(C2)the brook which flowed underground through the region, saying, "Why should the kings of Assyria come and find an abundance of water?"⁴ So many people assembled ^(C1)and stopped up all the springs and ^(C2)the stream which flowed ^(F1)through the region, saying, "Why should the kings of Assyria come and find abundant water?"⁴ So there was gathered much people together, and they stopped all the springs, and the brook that flowed through the midst of the land, saying, Why should the kings of Assyria come, and find much water? ⁴ So many of the people assembled themselues, and stopt all the fountaines, and the riuer that ranne through the middes of the countrey, saying, Why should the Kings of Asshur come, and finde much water?⁴ So many people gathered ^(C1)and stopped up all the springs and ^(C2)the stream which flowed in the midst of the land, saying, "Why should the kings of Assyria come and find abundant water?"⁴ Many people assembled and stopped up all the springs and the stream that flowed through the land. “Why should the kings^(a) of Assyria come and find plenty of water?” they said. ⁴ a large crowd was gathered to block all the springs and the stream flowing through the countryside. They reasoned, "Why should the kings of Ashur come and find an ample supply of water?"

⁴ And there was gathered together much people, and they stopped all the fountains, and the torrent that flows through the midst of the land, saying, Why should the kings of Assyria come and find much water? ⁴ Many people came together and stopped all the springs and the stream that flowed through the middle of the country. They said, "The king of Assyria will not find much water when he comes here!"⁴ So there was gathered a great multitude of the people of Israel together, who concealed all the fountains and the great brooks that ran through the midst of the land, saying, Lest the king of Assyria come and find much water. ⁴ Then many people were gathered, and they blocked off all the springs and the river that flowed through the midst of the land, saying, "Why should the kings of Assyria come and find much water?" ⁴ And many people were gathered, and they stopped all the fountains, and the torrent that was rushing through the land, saying, Why should the kings of Assyria come and find much water?⁴ and there gathered together a greate people, and couered all ye welles and water brokes in the myddes of the londe, and sayde: Lest the kynges of Assur fynde moch water wha they come. ⁴ So there was gathered much people together, and they stopped all the fountains, and the brook that flowed through the midst of the land, saying, Why should the kings of Assyria come, and find much water? ⁴ So they got together a great number of people, and had all the water-springs and the stream flowing through the land stopped up, saying, Why let the kings of Assyria come and have much water?⁴ For there gathered many of the people together, and stopt all the welles, and the broke that ran through the middes of the land, saying: Why shall the kinges of the Assyrians come and finde much water?⁴ So there was gathered much people together, and they stopped all the fountains, and the brook that flowed through the midst of the land, saying: 'Why should the kings of Assyria come, and find much water?'⁴ So there was gathered much people together, who stopt all the fountaines, and the brooke that ranne through the midst of the land, saying, Why should the kings of Assyria come, and finde much water? ⁴ And he collected many people, and stopped the wells of water, and the river that flowed through the city, saying, Lest the king of Assyria come, and find much water, and strengthen himself. ⁴ So there was gathered much people together, and they stopped all the fountains, and the brook that flowed through the midst of the land, saying, Why should the kings of Assyria come and find much water? ⁴ he gaderide togidere a ful greet multitude, and thei stoppiden alle the wellis, and the ryuer, that flowide in the myddis of the lond; and seiden, Lest the kyngis of Assiriens comen, and fynden abundance of watris.⁴ So many people were gathered together, and they stopped all the fountains, and the brook that flowed through the midst of the land, saying, Why should the kings of Assyria come, and find much water?⁴ So there were assembled many people, who stopped all the fountains, and the brook that ran through the midst of the land, saying, Why should the kings of Assyria come, and find much water?⁴ Thus many people gathered together who stopped all the springs and the brook that ran through the land, saying, "Why should the kings [fn] of Assyria come and find much water?" ⁴ They organized a huge work crew to stop the flow of the springs, cutting off the brook that ran through the fields. For they said, "Why should the kings of Assyria come here and find plenty of water?" ⁴ Many people were gathered, and they stopped all the wells and the small river which flowed through the land. They said, "Why should the kings of Assyria come and find much water?" ⁴ A great many people were gathered, and they stopped all the springs and the wadi that flowed through the land, saying, "Why should the Assyrian kings come and find water in abundance?" ⁴ And there were gathered together much people, so they stopped all the fountains, and the torrent that flowed through the midst of the land, saying, - Wherefore should the kings of Assyria come, and find many waters? ⁴ So there was gathered much people together, who stopped all the fountains, and the brook that ran through the midst of the land, saying, Why should the kings of Assyria come, and find much water?⁴ A great many people were gathered, and they stopped all the springs and the brook that flowed through the land, saying, "Why should the kings of Assyria come and find much water?"⁴ and much people are gathered, and they stop all the fountains and the brook that is rushing into the midst of the land, saying, `Why do the kings of Asshur come, and have found much water?'⁴ and many people are gathered, and they stop all the fountains and the brook that is rushing into the midst of the land, saying, "Why do the kings of Asshur come, and have found much water?"⁴ So many people assembled ^(C1)and stopped up all the springs and ^(C2)the stream which flowed ^(F1)through the region, saying, "Why should the kings of Assyria come and find abundant water?"⁵ Then Hezekiah strengthened his position by rebuilding the entire broken-down wall^(C1) and heightening the towers and the other outside wall.^(C2) He repaired the supporting terraces^(C3) of the city of David, and made an abundance of weapons and shields.

⁵ Also he strengthened himself, and built up all the wall that was broken, and raised it up to the towers, and another wall without, and repaired Millo in the city of David, and made darts and shields in abundance. ⁵ He set to work resolutely and built up ^(c)all the wall that was broken down and raised towers upon it,^[a] and outside it he built another wall, and he strengthened the ^(d)Millo in the city of David. He also made weapons and shields in abundance. ⁵ Then Hezekiah made Jerusalem stronger. He rebuilt all the broken parts of the wall and put towers on it. He also built another wall outside the first one and strengthened the area that was filled in on the east side of the old part of Jerusalem. He also made many weapons and shields. ⁵ Hezekiah energetically rebuilt every broken wall. He erected towers and an outer wall, and fortified the terrace of the City of David. He made many weapons and shields.⁵ Also Hezekiah resolutely set to work and ^(C1)rebuilt all the wall that had been broken down, and erected towers on it, and he built ^(C2)another wall outside and strengthened the ^(C3)Millo (fortification) in the City of David, and made a great number of weapons and shields.⁵ And he resolutely set to work and ^(C1)rebuilt all of the wall that had been broken down and ^(F1)erected towers on it, and built ^(C2)another outside wall and strengthened the ^(F2)(C3)Millo in the city of David, and made weapons and shields in great numbers.⁵ He took courage, and built up all the wall that was broken down, and raised [it] up to the towers, and the other wall outside, and strengthened Millo [in] the city of David, and made weapons and shields in abundance. ⁵ And he tooke courage, and built all the broken wall, and made vp the towers, and another wall without, and repayred Millo in the citie of Dauid, & made many dartes & shields.⁵ And he strengthened himself and ^(C1)rebuilt all the wall that had been broken down and ^(F1)erected towers on it, and built ^(C2)another outside wall and strengthened the ^(F2)(C3)Millo in the city of David, and made weapons and shields in great number.⁵ Then Hezekiah worked resolutely to rebuild all the broken sections of the wall and to raise up towers on it. He also built an outer wall and reinforced the supporting terraces^(a) of the City of David, and he produced an abundance of weapons and shields.

⁵ Hezekiah also had workers repair the broken sections of the city wall. Then they built defense towers and an outer wall to help protect the one already there. The landfill on the east side of David's City was also strengthened.

He gave orders to make a large supply of weapons and shields, ⁵ Then, taking courage, he rebuilt all the broken sections of the wall, raised towers on it, built another wall outside that, strengthened the Millo in the City of David, and made a large quantity of spears and shields.

⁵ And he strengthened himself, and built up all the wall that was broken down, and raised it up to the towers, and [built] another wall outside, and fortified the Millo of the city of David, and made darts and shields in abundance. ⁵ Hezekiah made Jerusalem stronger. This is how he did it: He rebuilt all the parts of the wall that were broken down. He also built towers on the wall. He also built another wall outside the first wall. He rebuilt the strong places on the east side of the old part of Jerusalem. He made many weapons and shields.⁵ They also strengthened themselves and built up one wall opposite the other and polluted the canal which David had constructed. And Hezekiah made weapons, shields, and spears in abundance. ⁵ The king strengthened the city's defenses by repairing the wall, building towers on it,^[a] and building an outer wall. In addition, he repaired the defenses built on the land that was filled in on the east side of the old part of Jerusalem. He also had a large number of spears and shields made. ⁵ Then he strengthened himself and built up all the walls that were broken down, and raised towers upon them and another wall outside.^[a] And he strengthened the Millo of the city of David and made much weaponry and small shields. ⁵ And he made himself strong and built all the wall that was broken, and raised on it the towers; and outside, another wall; and strengthened Millo, the city of David, and made darts in abundance, and shields.⁵ And he toke a corage vnto him, and buylded all the walles where they were in decaye, and made towres theron, and buylded yet another wall without, and strengthed Millo in the cite of Dauid. And made moch ordinaunce and shyldes, ⁵ And he took courage, and built up all the wall that was broken down, and ^[c]raised it up to the towers, and ^[d]the other wall without, and strengthened Millo in the city of David, and made weapons and shields in abundance. ⁵ Then he took heart, building up the wall where it was broken down, and making its towers higher, and building another wall outside; and he made strong the Millo in the town of David, and got together a great store of all sorts of instruments of war.⁵ And Hezekia went to lustyly, and buylt vp the wall where it was broken, and made ordinaunce vpon the towres, and to the other wall without, and repaired Millo in the citie of Dauid, and made many dartes and shieldes.⁵ And he took courage, and built up all the wall that was broken down, and raised it up to the towers, and another wall without, and strengthened Millo in the city of David, and made weapons and shields in abundance.⁵ Also he strengthened himselfe, and built vp all the wall that was broken, and raised it vp to the towers, and another wall without, and prepared Millo in the citie of Dauid, and made darts and shields in abundance. ⁵ And Ezekias strengthened himself, and built all the wall that had been pulled down, and the towers, and another wall in front without, and fortified the strong place of the city of David, and prepared arms in abundance. ⁵ And he took courage, and built up all the wall that was broken down, and raised it up to the towers, and the other wall without, and strengthened Millo [in] the city of David, and made weapons and shields in abundance. ⁵ Also he dide wittili, and bildide al the wal that was distride, and he bildide touris aboue, and an other wal withoutforth. ⁵ Then Hezekiah worked hard at repairing all the broken sections of the wall, erecting towers, and constructing a second wall outside the first. He also reinforced the supporting terraces^[a] in the City of David and manufactured large numbers of weapons and shields. ⁵ Then Hezekiah took strength of heart and built again all of the wall that had been broken down. He built towers on it, and built another outside wall. He made the Millo strong in the city of David. And he made many battle-coverings and objects to fight with. ⁵ Hezekiah^[a] set to work resolutely and built up the entire wall that was broken down, and raised towers on it,^[b] and outside it he built another wall; he also strengthened the Millo in the city of David, and made weapons and shields in abundance. ⁵ And he took courage, and built all the wall that was broken down and carried up thereon towers, and, on the outside, another wall, and strengthened Millo, the city of David,-and made weapons in abundance, and bucklers, ⁵ Also he strengthened himself, and built up all the wall that was broken, and raised it up to the towers, and another wall without, and repaired Millo in the city of David, and made darts and shields in abundance.⁵ He set to work resolutely and built up all the wall that was broken down, and raised towers upon it, and outside it he built another wall; and he strengthened the Millo in the city of David. He also made weapons and shields in abundance.⁵ And he strengtheneth himself, and buildeth the whole of the wall that is broken, and causeth [it] to ascend unto the towers, and at the outside of the wall another, and strengtheneth Millo, [in] the city of David, and maketh darts in abundance, and shields.⁵ And he strengthens himself, and builds the whole of the wall that is broken, and causes [it] to ascend to the towers, and at the outside of the wall [builds] another, and strengthens Millo [in] the City of David, and makes darts in abundance, and shields.^5-6 Hezekiah also went to work repairing every part of the city wall that was damaged, built defensive towers on it, built another wall of defense further out, and reinforced the defensive rampart (the Millo) of the old City of David. He also built up a large store of armaments—spears and shields. He then appointed military officers to be responsible for the people and got them all together at the public square in front of the city gate.

^6-8 Hezekiah rallied the people, saying, "Be strong! Take courage! Don't be intimidated by the king of Assyria and his troops—there are more on our side than on their side. He only has a bunch of mere men; we have our God to help us and fight for us!"

Morale surged. Hezekiah's words put steel in their spines.

^9-15 Later on, Sennacherib, who had set up camp a few miles away at Lachish, sent messengers to Jerusalem, addressing Judah through Hezekiah: "A proclamation of Sennacherib king of Assyria: You poor people—do you think you're safe in that so-called fortress of Jerusalem? You're sitting ducks. Do you think Hezekiah will save you? Don't be stupid—Hezekiah has fed you a pack of lies. When he says, ‘God will save us from the power of the king of Assyria,' he's lying—you're all going to end up dead. Wasn't it Hezekiah who cleared out all the neighborhood worship shrines and told you, ‘There is only one legitimate place to worship'? Do you have any idea what I and my ancestors have done to all the countries around here? Has there been a single god anywhere strong enough to stand up against me? Can you name one god among all the nations that either I or my ancestors have ravaged that so much as lifted a finger against me? So what makes you think you'll make out any better with your god? Don't let Hezekiah fool you; don't let him get by with his barefaced lies; don't trust him. No god of any country or kingdom ever has been one bit of help against me or my ancestors—what kind of odds does that give your god?"

¹⁶ The messengers felt free to throw in their personal comments, putting down both God and God's servant Hezekiah.

¹⁷ Sennacherib continued to send letters insulting the God of Israel: "The gods of the nations were powerless to help their people; the god of Hezekiah is no better, probably worse."

^18-19 The messengers would come up to the wall of Jerusalem and shout up to the people standing on the wall, shouting their propaganda in Hebrew, trying to scare them into demoralized submission. They contemptuously lumped the God of Jerusalem in with the handmade gods of other peoples.

^20-21 King Hezekiah, joined by the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz, responded by praying, calling up to heaven. God answered by sending an angel who wiped out everyone in the Assyrian camp, both warriors and officers. Sennacherib was forced to return home in disgrace, tail between his legs. When he went into the temple of his god, his own sons killed him.

^22-23 God saved Hezekiah and the citizens of Jerusalem from Sennacherib king of Assyria and everyone else. And he continued to take good care of them. People streamed into Jerusalem bringing offerings for the worship of God and expensive presents to Hezekiah king of Judah. All the surrounding nations were impressed—Hezekiah's stock soared.

²⁴ Some time later Hezekiah became deathly sick. He prayed to God and was given a reassuring sign.

^25-26 But the sign, instead of making Hezekiah grateful, made him arrogant. This made God angry, and his anger spilled over on Judah and Jerusalem. But then Hezekiah, and Jerusalem with him, repented of his arrogance, and God withdrew his anger while Hezekiah lived.

^27-31 Hezekiah ended up very wealthy and much honored. He built treasuries for all his silver, gold, precious stones, spices, shields, and valuables, barns for the grain, new wine, and olive oil, stalls for his various breeds of cattle, and pens for his flocks. He founded royal cities for himself and built up huge stocks of sheep and cattle. God saw to it that he was extravagantly rich. Hezekiah was also responsible for diverting the upper outlet of the Gihon spring and rerouting the water to the west side of the City of David. Hezekiah succeeded in everything he did. But when the rulers of Babylon sent emissaries to find out about the sign from God that had taken place earlier, God left him on his own to see what he would do; he wanted to test his heart.

^32-33 The rest of the history of Hezekiah and his life of loyal service, you can read for yourself—it's written in the vision of the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz in the Royal Annals of the Kings of Judah and Israel. When Hezekiah died, they buried him in the upper part of the King David cemetery. Everyone in Judah and Jerusalem came to the funeral. He was buried in great honor.

Manasseh his son was the next king.

Then he encouraged them, saying, ⁶ and he appointed army commanders over the troops. Then he gathered the troops together in the open area in front of the city gate and said to them: ⁶ He appointed military commanders over the people, then gathered them before him in the open space at the city gate and spoke these words of encouragement to them:

He met with these officers at the open place near the city gate. He talked to the officers and encouraged them. He said, "Be strong and brave. Don't be afraid or worry about the king of Assyria or the large army with him. There is a greater power with us than the king of Assyria has with him! ⁶ And he set captains of war over the people, each one over ten, and gathered them together to him in the market place of the city, and spoke to all of them, saying. ⁶ He placed all the men in the city under the command of army officers and had them assemble in the open square at the city gate. He said to them, ⁶ And he appointed commanders for battle over the people and gathered them to himself into the public square of the gate of the city.
