Building the Temple

¹ Then Solomon began^(C1) to build the Lord’s temple in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah^(C2) where the Lord^(F1) had appeared to his father David, at the site David had prepared on the threshing floor of Ornan^(F2) the Jebusite.

¹ Then Shlomo began to build the house of the LORD at Yerushalayim on Mount Moriyah, where [the LORD] appeared to David his father, which he made ready in the place that David had appointed, in the threshing floor of Ornan the Yevusi.

Temple Construction Begins

(1 Kings 6:1-4)

¹ Then Solomon began to build the house of the LORD in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where the LORD^(a) had appeared to his father David. This was the place that David had prepared on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.^1-2 Solomon's workers began building the temple in Jerusalem on the second day of the second month,^[a] four years after Solomon had become king of Israel. It was built on Mount Moriah where the Lord had appeared to David at the threshing place that had belonged to Araunah^[b] from Jebus.

¹ Then Shlomo began to build the house of Adonai in Yerushalayim on Mount Moriyah, where Adonai had appeared to David his father. Provision had been made for this at the place David had chosen, the threshing-floor of Ornan the Y'vusi.

¹ And Solomon began to build the house of Jehovah at Jerusalem on mount Moriah, where he appeared to David his father, in the place that David had prepared in the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

Solomon Builds the Temple

¹ Solomon began building the Lord's Temple at Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where the Lord appeared to David, Solomon's father. This was the place David had prepared for the Temple. It had been the threshing floor of Araunah^[a] the Jebusite.^[b]

¹ THEN Solomon began to build the house of the LORD in Jerusalem on mount Moriah, in the place which David his father had prepared in the threshing floor which he had bought from Aran the Jebusite.

^1 (a)King David, Solomon's father, had already prepared a place for the Temple. It was in Jerusalem, on Mount Moriah, where the Lord appeared to David, at the place which Araunah the Jebusite had used as a threshing place. King Solomon began the construction

¹ And Salomon beganne to buylde the house of the LORDE at Ierusalem vpon the mount Moria, that was shewed vnto Dauid his father, which Dauid had prepared for the rowme, vpon the corne floore of Arnan the Iebusite.

¹ Then Solomon began to build the house of Jehovah at Jerusalem on mount Moriah, where Jehovah appeared unto David his father, which he made ready ^[a]in the place that David had appointed, in the threshing-floor of ^[b]Ornan the Jebusite.

¹ Then Solomon made a start at building the house of the Lord on Mount Moriah in Jerusalem, where the Lord had been seen by his father David, in the place which David had made ready in the grain-floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

¹ Then Solomon began to build the house of the LORD at Jerusalem in mount Moriah, where [the LORD] appeared unto David his father; for which provision had been made in the Place of David, in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.

¹ So Solomon began to build the Temple of the Lord in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where the Lord had appeared to David, his father. The Temple was built on the threshing floor of Araunah^[a] the Jebusite, the site that David had selected.

¹ Then Solomon began to build the Lord's house in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah. It was there that the Lord had shown Himself to his father David. It was the place that David had chosen, on the grain-floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

¹ Then began Solomon, to build the house of Yahweh, in Jerusalem, in Mount Moriah, where he had appeared unto David his father, - -in the place which David had prepared, in the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

¹ And Solomon began to build the house of the Lord in Jerusalem, in mount Moria, which had been shewn to David his father, in the place which David had prepared in the thrashingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.

¹ Then Solomon began to build the house of the LORD in Jerusalem on Mount Mori'ah, where the LORD had appeared to David his father, at the place that David had appointed, on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jeb'usite.

¹ And Solomon beginneth to build the house of Jehovah, in Jerusalem, in the mount of Moriah, where He appeared to David his father, in the place that David had prepared, in the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite,

¹ And Solomon begins to build the house of YHWH in Jerusalem, on the mount of Moriah where He appeared to his father David, in the place that David had prepared, in the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite,^1-4 So Solomon broke ground, launched construction of the house of God in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, the place where God had appeared to his father David. The precise site, the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite, had been designated by David. He broke ground on the second day in the second month of the fourth year of his rule. These are the dimensions that Solomon set for the construction of the house of God: ninety feet long and thirty feet wide. The porch in front stretched the width of the building, that is, thirty feet; and it was thirty feet high.

^4-7 The interior was gold-plated. He paneled the main hall with cypress and veneered it with fine gold engraved with palm tree and chain designs. He decorated the building with precious stones and gold from Parvaim. Everything was coated with gold veneer: rafters, doorframes, walls, and doors. Cherubim were engraved on the walls.

^8-9 He made the Holy of Holies a cube, thirty feet wide, long, and high. It was veneered with six hundred talents (something over twenty-two tons) of gold. The gold nails weighed fifty shekels (a little over a pound). The upper rooms were also veneered in gold.

^10-13 He made two sculptures of cherubim, gigantic angel-like figures, for the Holy of Holies, both veneered with gold. The combined wingspread of the side-by-side cherubim (each wing measuring seven and a half feet) stretched from wall to wall, thirty feet. They stood erect facing the main hall.

¹⁴ He fashioned the curtain of violet, purple, and crimson fabric and worked a cherub design into it.

^15-17 He made two huge free-standing pillars, each fifty-two feet tall, their capitals extending another seven and a half feet. The top of each pillar was set off with an elaborate filigree of chains, like necklaces, from which hung a hundred pomegranates. He placed the pillars in front of The Temple, one on the right, and the other on the left. The right pillar he named Jakin (Security) and the left pillar he named Boaz (Stability).

The length by cubits after the first measure was sixty cubits, and the breadth twenty cubits.

³ Now these are the things wherein Solomon was instructed for the building of the house of God. The length by cubits after the first measure was threescore cubits, and the breadth twenty cubits. ³ These are Solomon's ^(d)measurements^[b] for building the house of God: ^(e)the length, in cubits^[c] of the old standard, was sixty cubits, and the breadth twenty cubits.

³ Solomon used these measurements for building the Temple of God. It was ninety feet long and thirty feet wide, using the old measurement.

³ Solomon laid the foundation for God's temple; its length (determined according to the old standard of measure) was 90 feet, and its width 30 feet.

³ The inside of the temple was ninety feet long and thirty feet wide, according to the older standards.^[c]

³ These are the foundations Shlomo laid for building the house of God: the length in old-standard cubits was sixty cubits [105 feet] and the width twenty cubits [thirty-five feet].

³ And this was Solomon's foundation for the construction of the house of God. The length by cubits after the first measure was sixty cubits, and the breadth twenty cubits.

³ These are the measurements he used for building the foundation of God's Temple, using the old cubit.^[c] The foundation was 60 cubits^[d] long and 20 cubits^[e] wide.³ Now these are the measurements which Solomon measured for the building of the house of the LORD: The length of the house by the measure of the sanctuary was sixty cubits, and its height thirty cubits, and its breadth twenty cubits. ³ The Temple which King Solomon built was 90 feet long and 30 feet wide.

³ Now these were the measurements of Solomon for building the house of God: the length in cubits by the former measurement was sixty cubits, and the width was twenty cubits. ³ And these are the foundations Solomon laid , to build the house of God: the length by cubits according to the ancient measure, sixty cubits; and the breadth twenty cubits.³ And so layed Salomon the foundacion to buylde the house of God: first the length thre score cubytes, the bredth twentye cubites ³ Now ^[c]these are the foundations which Solomon laid for the building of the house of God. The length by cubits after the first measure was threescore cubits, and the breadth twenty cubits. ³ And Solomon put the base of the house of God in position; by the older measure it was sixty cubits long and twenty cubits wide.³ And these are the patternes whereby Solomon was instruct to buylde the house of God: The length was threescore cubites after the olde measure, and the breadth twentie cubites.³ Now these are the foundations which Solomon laid for the building of the house of God. The length by cubits after the ancient measure was threescore cubits, and the breadth twenty cubits.³ Now these are the things wherein Solomon was instructed for the building of the house of God. The length by cubites after the first measure was threescore cubits, and the breadth twentie cubites. ³ And thus Solomon began to build the house of God: the length in cubits—even the first measurement from end to end, was sixty cubits, and the breadth twenty cubits. ³ Now these are the foundations which Solomon laid for the building of the house of God. The length by cubits after the first measure was threescore cubits, and the breadth twenty cubits. ³ And these weren the foundementis, whiche Salomon settide, that he schulde bilde the hous of God; sixti cubitis of lengthe in the firste mesure, twenti cubitis of breede.³ Now these are the foundations which Solomon laid for the building of the house of God. The length by cubits after the first measure was threescore cubits, and the width twenty cubits.³ Now these [are the things in which] Solomon was instructed for the building of the house of God. The length by cubits after the first measure [was] sixty cubits, and the breadth twenty cubits.³ This is the foundation which Solomon laid for building the house of God: The length was sixty cubits (by cubits according to the former measure) and the width twenty cubits.

³ These are the dimensions Solomon used for the foundation of the Temple of God (using the old standard of measurement).^[c] It was 90 feet long and 30 feet wide.^{[d] 3} He laid the base for building the house of God. It was thirty long steps, using the old way to find the length. And it was ten long steps wide. ³ These are Solomon's measurements^[a] for building the house of God: the length, in cubits of the old standard, was sixty cubits, and the width twenty cubits. ³ And, these, are the things wherein Solomon was grounded for the building of the house of God, - The length, by cubits, in the first measure, was sixty cubits, and, the breadth, twenty cubits.³ Now these are the foundations, which Solomon laid, to build the house of God, the length by the first measure sixty cubits, the breadth twenty cubits.³ These are Solomon's measurements for building the house of God: the length, in cubits of the old standard, was sixty cubits, and the breadth twenty cubits.³ And [in] these hath Solomon been instructed to build the house of God: The length [in] cubits by the former measure [is] sixty cubits, and the breadth twenty cubits.³ And [in] these Solomon has been instructed to build the house of God: the length [in] cubits by the former measure [is] sixty cubits, and the breadth twenty cubits.

Dimensions and Materials of the Temple

⁴ And the porch that was in the front of the house, the length of it was according to the breadth of the house, twenty cubits, and the height was an hundred and twenty: and he overlaid it within with pure gold. ⁴ The vestibule in front of the nave of the house was twenty cubits long, equal to the width of the house,^[d] and its height was 120 cubits. He overlaid it on the inside with pure gold. ⁴ The porch in front of the main room of the Temple was thirty feet long and thirty feet high.

He covered the inside of the porch with pure gold. ⁴ The porch in front of the main hall was 30 feet long, corresponding to the width of the temple, and its height was 30 feet. He plated the inside with pure gold. ⁴ The porch in front of the house ^(C1)was as long as the width of the house, twenty cubits, and the height was 120 cubits. He overlaid it inside with pure gold.⁴ The porch which was in front of the house ^(C1)was as long as the width of the house, ^(F1)twenty cubits, and the height ^(F2)twenty; and inside he overlaid it with pure gold.⁴ The porch that was before [the house], the length of it, according to the breadth of the house, was twenty cubits, and the height one hundred twenty; and he overlaid it within with pure gold. ⁴ And the porch, that was before the length in the front of the breadth was twentie cubits, and the height was an hundreth and twentie, & he ouerlayd it within with pure golde.⁴ And the porch which was in front of the house ^(C1)was as long as the width of the house, ^(F1)20 cubits, and the height 120; and inside he overlaid it with pure gold.⁴ The portico at the front, extending across the width of the temple, was twenty cubits^(a) long^(a) and twenty cubits high. He overlaid the inside with pure gold.

The Temple’s Interior

(1 Kings 6:14-22 ⁴ Across the front of the temple was a porch thirty feet wide and thirty feet^[d] high. The inside walls of the porch were covered with pure gold. ⁴ The length of the hall fronting the house was the same as the house's width, thirty-five feet and the height 210 [feet]; and he overlaid it with pure gold.

⁴ And the porch which was in front was twenty cubits in length, in front of the house broadways, and the height was a hundred and twenty; and he overlaid it within with pure gold. ⁴ The porch in front of the Temple was 20 cubits long and 20 cubits high.^[f] He covered the inside of the porch with pure gold.⁴ And he made a porch in the front thereof; the length of it was the same as the breadth of the house, twenty cubits, and its height twenty cubits; and he overlaid it within with pure gold. ⁴ The entrance room was the full width of the Temple, 30 feet, and was 180 feet high. The inside of the room was overlaid with pure gold. ⁴ The length of the portico that was in front was the same as the front of the width of the house:^[a] twenty cubits. And its height was one hundred and twenty cubits. And he overlaid it on the inside with pure gold. ⁴ As to the porch on the front, the length, according to the breadth of the house in front, was twenty cubits, and the height a hundred and twenty; and he overlaid it inside with pure gold.⁴ and the Porche before the wydenes of the house, was twentye cubites longe, but the height was an hundreth and twentye, and he ouerlayed it on the ynsyde with pure golde. ⁴ And the porch that was before the house, the length of it, according to the breadth of the house, was twenty cubits, and the height a hundred and twenty; and he overlaid it within with pure gold. ⁴ And the covered way in front of the house was twenty cubits long, as wide as the house, and a hundred and twenty cubits high, all plated inside with the best gold.⁴ And the porche that was before the length in the front, according to the breadth of the house, was twentie cubites, and the heyght was an hundred and twentie cubites: and he ouerlayed it on the inner syde with pure golde.⁴ And the porch that was before [the house], the length of it, according to the breadth of the house, was twenty cubits, and the height a hundred and twenty; and he overlaid it within with pure gold.⁴ And the porch that was in the front of the house, the length of it was atcording to the breadth of the house, twentie cubites, and the height was an hundred and twenty: and he ouerlaid it within, with pure gold. ⁴ And the portico in front of the house, its length in front of the breadth of the house was twenty cubits, and its height a hundred and twenty cubits: and he gilded it within with pure gold. ⁴ And the porch that was before [the house], the length of it, according to the breadth of the house, was twenty cubits, and the height an hundred and twenty: and he overlaid it within with pure gold. ⁴ Forsothe he bildide a porche bifor the frount, that was stretchid forth along bisidis the mesure of the breede of the hows, of twenti cubitis, sotheli the hiynesse was of an hundrid and twenti cubitis; and he ouergilde it with inne with clennest gold.⁴ And the porch that was before [the house], the length of it, according to the width of the house, was twenty cubits, and the height 120; and he overlaid it inside with pure gold.⁴ And the porch that [was] in the front [of the house], the length [of it was] according to the breadth of the house, twenty cubits, and the hight [was] a hundred and twenty: and he overlaid it within with pure gold.⁴ And the vestibule that was in front of the sanctuary [fn] was twenty cubits long across the width of the house, and the height was one hundred and [fn] twenty. He overlaid the inside with pure gold. ⁴ The entry room at the front of the Temple was 30 feet^[e] wide, running across the entire width of the Temple, and 30 feet^[f] high. He overlaid the inside with pure gold. ⁴ The porch in front of the house was as long as the house was wide, ten long steps. It was thirty-three times taller than a man. And he covered the inside with pure gold. ⁴ The vestibule in front of the nave of the house was twenty cubits long, across the width of the house;^[b] and its height was one hundred twenty cubits. He overlaid it on the inside with pure gold. ⁴ And, the porch which was in front of the length, in front of the breadth of the house, was twenty cubits, and, the height thereof, was a hundred and twenty, - and he overlaid it, within, with pure gold.⁴ And the porch in the front, which was extended in length according to the measure of the breadth of the house, twenty cubits: and the height was a hundred and twenty cubits: and he overlaid it within with pure gold.⁴ The vestibule in front of the nave of the house was twenty cubits long, equal to the width of the house; and its height was a hundred and twenty cubits. He overlaid it on the inside with pure gold.⁴ As to the porch that [is] on the front, the length [is] by the front of the breadth of the house, twenty cubits, and the height a hundred and twenty, and he overlayeth it within with pure gold.⁴ As for the porch that [is] on the front, the length [is] by the front of the breadth of the house—twenty cubits, and the height one hundred and twenty [[or twenty]], and he overlays it within with pure gold.⁴ The porch which was in front of the house ^(C1)was as long as the width of the house, twenty cubits, and the height 120; and inside he overlaid it with pure gold.⁵ The larger room^(F1) he paneled with cypress wood, overlaid with fine gold, and decorated with palm trees and chains. ⁵ The greater house he made a ceiling with fir-wood, which he overlaid with fine gold, and worked thereon palm trees and chains.

⁵ And the greater house he cieled with fir tree, which he overlaid with fine gold, and set thereon palm trees and chains. ^5 (f)The nave he lined with cypress and covered it with fine gold ^(g)and made palms and chains on it. ⁵ He put panels of pine on the walls of the main room and covered them with pure gold. These are the dimensions that Solomon set for the construction of the house of God: ninety feet long and thirty feet wide. The porch in front stretched the width of the building, that is, thirty feet; and it was thirty feet high.

He decorated the building with precious stones and gold from Parvaim. Everything was coated with gold veneer: rafters, doorframes, walls, and doors. Cherubim were engraved on the walls.

^8-9 He made the Holy of Holies a cube, thirty feet wide, long, and high. It was veneered with six hundred talents (something over twenty-two tons) of gold. The gold nails weighed fifty shekels (a little over a pound). The upper rooms were also veneered in gold.

^10-13 He made two sculptures of cherubim, gigantic angel-like figures, for the Holy of Holies, both veneered with gold. The combined wingspread of the side-by-side cherubim (each wing measuring seven and a half feet) stretched from wall to wall, thirty feet. They stood erect facing the main hall.

^15-17 He made two huge free-standing pillars, each fifty-two feet tall, their capitals extending another seven and a half feet. The top of each pillar was set off with an elaborate filigree of chains, like necklaces, from which hung a hundred pomegranates. He placed the pillars in front of The Temple, one on the right, and the other on the left. The right pillar he named Jakin (Security) and the left pillar he named Boaz (Stability).
