¹ And his son Jehoshaphat reigns in his stead, and he strengthens himself against Israel,^1-6 Asa's son Jehoshaphat was the next king; he started out by working on his defense system against Israel. He put troops in all the fortress cities of Judah and deployed garrisons throughout Judah and in the towns of Ephraim that his father Asa had captured. God was on Jehoshaphat's side because he stuck to the ways of his father Asa's early years. He didn't fool around with the popular Baal religion—he was a seeker and follower of the God of his father and was obedient to him; he wasn't like Israel. And God secured the kingdom under his rule, gave him a firm grip on it. And everyone in Judah showed their appreciation by bringing gifts. Jehoshaphat ended up very rich and much honored. He was single-minded in following God; and he got rid of the local sex-and-religion shrines.

Jehoshaphat Succeeds Asa

^1 (C1)Jehoshaphat his son then became king in his place, and made his position over Israel firm.² He stationed troops in every fortified city of Judah^(C1) and set garrisons in the land of Judah and in the cities of Ephraim that his father Asa had captured.^(C2)

² And he placed forces in all the fortified cities of Judah, and set garrisons in the land of Judah, and in the cities of Ephraim that Asa his father had taken. ² He put groups of soldiers in all the towns of Judah that were made into fortresses. ³ Now the Lord was with Jehoshaphat because he walked in the former ways of his father David.^(F1) He did not seek the Baals ³ The LORD was with Yehoshafat, because he walked in the first ways of his father David, and didn't seek the Ba`alim,

³ And the Lord was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the first ways of his father David, and sought not unto Baalim; ³ The Lord was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the earlier ways of his father David. He did not seek the Baals,

³ The Lord was with Jehoshaphat, because he lived as his ancestor David had lived when he first became king. Jehoshaphat did not ask for help from the Baal idols,

³ The Lord was with Jehoshaphat because he followed in his ancestor David's footsteps at the beginning of his reign. He did not seek the Baals,

Jehoshaphat's Kingdom Established

³ And Jehovah was with Jehoshaphat, for he walked in the first ways of his father David, and sought not unto the Baals;

³ The Lord was with Jehoshaphat because in his young life he did the good things his ancestor David did. Jehoshaphat did not follow the Baal idols.³ And the LORD was with Jehoshaphat because he walked in the first ways of his father David and did not pray to images; ³ The Lord blessed Jehoshaphat because he followed the example of his father's early life and did not worship Baal. ³ And Yahweh was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the former ways of David his father and did not seek after the Baals, ³ And Jehovah was with Jehoshaphat, for he walked in the first ways of his father David; and he did not seek to the Baals.³ And the LORDE was wt Iosaphat: for he walked in the olde wayes of his father Dauid, & soughte not Baalim, ³ And Jehovah was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the first ways of his father David, and sought not unto the Baalim, ³ And the Lord was with Jehoshaphat, because he went in the early ways of his father, not turning to the Baals,³ And the Lorde was with Iehosaphat, because he walked in the olde wayes of his father Dauid, and sought not Baalim,³ And the LORD was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the first ways of his father David, and sought not unto the Baalim;³ And the Lord was with Iehoshaphat, because hee walked in the first wayes of his father Dauid, and sought not vnto Baalim: ³ And the Lord was with Josaphat, for he walked in the first ways of his father, and did not seek to idols; ³ And the LORD was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the first ways of his father David, and sought not unto the Baalim; ³ And the Lord was with Josaphat, whiche yede in the firste weies of Dauid, his fadir; he hopide not in Baalym,³ And Yahweh was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the first ways of his father David, and did not seek to the Baalim,³ And the LORD was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the first ways of his father David, and sought not to Baalim;³ Now the LORD was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the former ways of his father David; he did not seek the Baals,

³ The Lord was with Jehoshaphat because he followed the example of his father's early years^[a] and did not worship the images of Baal. ³ The Lord was with Jehoshaphat because he followed the early ways of his father. He did not follow the false gods of Baal. ³ The Lord was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the earlier ways of his father;^[a] he did not seek the Baals, ³ And it came to pass, that, Yahweh, was with Jehoshaphat, - because he walked in the first ways of David his father, and sought not unto the Baalim;³ And the Lord was with Josaphat, because he walked in the first ways of David his father: and trusted not in Baalim,³ The LORD was with Jehosh'aphat, because he walked in the earlier ways of his father; he did not seek the Ba'als,³ And Jehovah is with Jehoshaphat, for he hath walked in the first ways of David his father, and hath not sought to Baalim,³ And YHWH is with Jehoshaphat, for he has walked in the first ways of his father David, and has not sought for the Ba‘alim,

His Good Reign

⁴ But sought to the Lord God of his father, and walked in his commandments, and not after the doings of Israel. ⁴ but sought the God of his father and walked in his commandments, ^(c)and not according to the practices of Israel. ⁴ but from the God of his father. He obeyed God's commands and did not live as the people of Israel lived. ⁴ but instead sought the God of his ancestors and obeyed his commands, unlike the Israelites. ⁴ but sought the God of his father, and walked in (obeyed) His commandments, ^(C1)and did not act as Israel did.⁴ but sought the God of his father, ^(F1)followed His commandments, ^(C1)and did not act as Israel did.⁴ but sought to the God of his father, and walked in his commandments, and not after the doings of Israel. ⁴ But sought the Lorde God of his father, and walked in his commandements, and not after the trade of Israel.⁴ but sought the God of his father, walked in His commandments, ^(C1)and did not act as Israel did.⁴ but he sought the God of his father and walked by His commandments rather than the practices of Israel. ⁴ but seeking the God of his father and living by his mitzvot, not by what Isra'el did.

⁴ but he sought the God of his father, and walked in his commandments, and not after the doings of Israel. ⁴ He looked for the God his ancestors followed. He followed God's commands and did not live the same way the Israelites lived.⁴ But he prayed to the LORD God of his father and walked in his commandments and kept his statutes, and did not do according to the ways of Israel. ⁴ He served his father's God, obeyed God's commands, and did not act the way the kings of Israel did. ⁴ but he sought after the God of his ancestors^[a] and walked in his commandments and not according to the works of Israel. ⁴ For he sought to the God of his father, and he walked in His commands, and not according to the deeds of Israel.⁴ but the God of his father, & walked in his commaundementes, & not after the workes of Israel: ⁴ but sought to the God of his father, and walked in his commandments, and not after the doings of Israel. ⁴ But turning to the God of his father and keeping his laws, and not doing as Israel did.⁴ But sought the Lorde God of his father, and walked in his commaundementes, and not after the doinges of Israel.⁴ but sought to the God of his father, and walked in His commandments, and not after the doings of Israel.⁴ But sought to the Lord God of his father, and walked in his commandements, and not after the doings of Israel: ⁴ but he sought to the Lord God of his father, and walked in the commandments of his father, and not according to the works of Israel. ⁴ but sought to the God of his father, and walked in his commandments, and not after the doings of Israel. ⁴ but in the Lord God of Dauid, his fadir, and he yede in the comaundementis of God, and not bi the synnes of Israel.⁴ but sought to the God of his father, and walked in his commandments, and not after the doings of Israel.⁴ But sought to the [LORD] God of his father, and walked in his commandments, and not after the doings of Israel.⁴ but sought the God [fn] of his father, and walked in His commandments and not according to the acts of Israel. ⁴ He sought his father's God and obeyed his commands instead of following the evil practices of the kingdom of Israel. ⁴ He looked to the God of his father, followed His Laws, and did not act as Israel did. ⁴ but sought the God of his father and walked in his commandments, and not according to the ways of Israel. ⁴ for, unto the God of his father, he sought, and, in his commandments, he walked, - and not according to the doing of Israel.⁴ But in the God of his father, and walked in his commandments, and not according to the sins of Israel.⁴ but sought the God of his father and walked in his commandments, and not according to the ways of Israel.⁴ for to the God of his father he hath sought, and in His commands he hath walked, and not according to the work of Israel.⁴ for he has sought for the God of his father, and he has walked in His commands, and not according to the work of Israel.⁴ but sought the God of his father, ^(F1)followed His commandments, ^(C1)and did not act as Israel did.⁵ So the Lord established the kingdom in his hand. Then all Judah brought him tribute, and he had riches and honor in abundance.^{(C1) 5} Therefore the LORD established the kingdom in his hand; and all Yehudah brought to Yehoshafat tribute; and he had riches and honor in abundance.

⁵ Therefore the Lord stablished the kingdom in his hand; and all Judah brought to Jehoshaphat presents; and he had riches and honour in abundance. ⁵ Therefore the Lord established the kingdom in his hand. And all Judah ^(d)brought tribute to Jehoshaphat, ^(e)and he had great riches and honor. ⁵ The Lord made Jehoshaphat a strong king over Judah. All the people of Judah brought gifts to Jehoshaphat, so he had much wealth and honor. ⁵ The Lord made his kingdom secure; all Judah brought tribute to Jehoshaphat, and he became very wealthy and greatly respected. ⁵ Therefore the LORD established the kingdom in his hand; and all Judah brought tribute to Jehoshaphat, and ^(C1)he had great wealth and honor.⁵ So the LORD established the kingdom in his ^(F1)control, and all Judah gave tribute to Jehoshaphat, and ^(C1)he had great riches and honor.⁵ Therefore Yahweh established the kingdom in his hand; and all Judah brought to Jehoshaphat tribute; and he had riches and honor in abundance. ⁵ Therefore the Lorde stablished the kingdome in his hande, and all Iudah brought presents to Iehoshaphat, so that he had of riches and honour in abundance.⁵ So Yahweh established the kingdom in his hand, and all Judah brought presents to Jehoshaphat, and ^(C1)he had great riches and honor.⁵ So the LORD established the kingdom in his hand, and all Judah brought him tribute, so that he had an abundance of riches and honor. ⁵ and helped him keep firm control of his kingdom. The people of Judah brought gifts to Jehoshaphat, but even after he became very rich and respected, ⁵ Therefore Adonai consolidated his rulership; all Y'hudah brought presents to Y'hoshafat, so that he had wealth and honor in abundance.

⁵ And Jehovah established the kingdom in his hand; and all Judah gave gifts to Jehoshaphat; and he had riches and honour in abundance. ⁵ The Lord made Jehoshaphat a strong king over Judah. All the people of Judah brought gifts to Jehoshaphat. So he had much wealth and honor.⁵ Therefore the LORD established the kingdom in his hand; and all Judah brought presents to Jehoshaphat and he had riches and honor in abundance. ⁵ The Lord gave Jehoshaphat firm control over the kingdom of Judah, and all the people brought him gifts, so that he became wealthy and highly honored. ⁵ So Yahweh established the kingdom in his hand. And all Judah gave tribute to Jehoshaphat, and he had much wealth and honor. ⁵ And Jehovah confirmed the kingdom in his hand. And all of Judah gave a present to Jehoshaphat. And he had riches and honor in abundance.⁵ therfore dyd the LORDE stablyshe the kyngdome in his hade. And all Iuda gaue presentes vnto Iosaphat, & he had greate riches & worshippe. ⁵ Therefore Jehovah established the kingdom in his hand; and all Judah brought to Jehoshaphat tribute; and he had riches and honor in abundance. ⁵ So the Lord made his kingdom strong; and all Judah gave offerings to Jehoshaphat, and he had great wealth and honour.⁵ And the Lorde stablished the kingdome in his hande, & all they that were in Iuda brought him presentes, so that he had aboundaunce of richesse and honour.⁵ Therefore the LORD established the kingdom in his hand; and all Judah brought to Jehoshaphat presents; and he had riches and honour in abundance.⁵ Therefore the Lord stablished the kingdome in his hand, and all Iudah brought to Iehoshaphat presents, and he had riches and honour in abundance. ⁵ And the Lord prospered the kingdom in his hand; and all Juda gave gifts to Josaphat; and he had great wealth and glory. ⁵ Therefore the LORD stablished the kingdom in his hand; and all Judah brought to Jehoshaphat presents; and he had riches and honour in abundance. ⁵ And the Lord confermyde the rewme in his hond; and al Juda yaf yiftis to Josaphat, and ritchessis with outen noumbre, and myche glorie weren maad to hym.⁵ Therefore Yahweh established the kingdom in his hand; and all Judah brought to Jehoshaphat tribute; and he had riches and honor in abundance.⁵ Therefore the LORD established the kingdom in his hand: and all Judah brought to Jehoshaphat presents; and he had riches and honor in abundance.⁵ Therefore the LORD established the kingdom in his hand; and all Judah gave presents to Jehoshaphat, and he had riches and honor in abundance. ⁵ So the Lord established Jehoshaphat's control over the kingdom of Judah. All the people of Judah brought gifts to Jehoshaphat, so he became very wealthy and highly esteemed. ⁵ So the Lord made the nation strong under his rule. And all Judah paid taxes to Jehoshaphat. He had great riches and honor. ⁵ Therefore the Lord established the kingdom in his hand. All Judah brought tribute to Jehoshaphat, and he had great riches and honor. ⁵ Therefore did Yahweh establish the kingdom in his hand, and all Judah gave a present unto Jehoshaphat, - and he came to have riches and honour, in abundance.⁵ And the Lord established the kingdom in his hand, and all Juda brought presents to Josaphat: and he acquired immense riches, and much glory.⁵ Therefore the LORD established the kingdom in his hand; and all Judah brought tribute to Jehosh'aphat; and he had great riches and honor.⁵ And Jehovah doth establish the kingdom in his hand, and all Judah give a present to Jehoshaphat, and he hath riches and honour in abundance,⁵ And YHWH establishes the kingdom in his hand, and all Judah gives a present to Jehoshaphat, and he has riches and honor in abundance,⁵ So the LORD established the kingdom in his ^(F1)control, and all Judah brought tribute to Jehoshaphat, and ^(C1)he had great riches and honor.⁶ His mind rejoiced in the Lord’s ways, and he again^(C1) removed the high places and Asherah poles from Judah.^(C2)

⁶ And his heart was lifted up in the ways of the Lord: moreover he took away the high places and groves out of Judah. ⁶ His heart was courageous in the ways of the Lord. And furthermore, ^(f)he took the high places and the Asherim out of Judah. ⁶ He wanted very much to obey the Lord. He also removed the places for worshiping gods and the Asherah idols from Judah. ⁶ He was committed to following the Lord; he even removed the high places and Asherah poles from Judah.⁶ His heart was encouraged and he took great pride in the ways of the LORD; moreover, he again ^(C1)removed the high places of pagan worship and the Asherim from Judah.

⁶ And he took courage in the ways of Jehovah; moreover, he removed the high places and Asherahs out of Judah. ⁶ His heart found pleasure in the ways of the Lord. He removed the high places and the Asherah poles from the country of Judah.⁶ And his heart was strengthened in the ways of the LORD; moreover he uprooted the altars and the high places which were within the territory of Judah. ⁶ He took pride in serving the Lord and destroyed all the pagan places of worship and the symbols of the goddess Asherah in Judah. ⁶ And his heart was courageous in the ways of Yahweh. Moreover, he removed the high places and the Asherahs from Judah.⁶ And his heart was exalted in the ways of Jehovah. And he again removed the high places and the Asherahs out of Judah.⁶ And whan his hert was coraged in the wayes of the LORDE, he put downe styll the hye places and groues out of Iuda. ⁶ And his heart was lifted up in the ways of Jehovah: and furthermore he took away the high places and the Asherim out of Judah.⁶ His heart was lifted up in the ways of the Lord; and he went so far as to take away the high places and the wood pillars out of Judah.⁶ And he lyft vp his heart vnto the wayes of the Lorde, and he put downe yet more of the high places and groues out of Iuda.⁶ And his heart was lifted up in the ways of the LORD; and furthermore he took away the high places and the Asherim out of Judah. ⁶ And his heart was lift vp in the wayes of the Lord: moreouer hee tooke away the high places and groues out of Iudah. ⁶ And his heart was exalted in the way of the Lord; and he removed the high places and the groves from the land of Juda. ⁶ And his heart was lifted up in the ways of the LORD: and furthermore he took away the high places and the Asherim out of Judah. ⁶ And whanne his herte hadde take hardynesse for the weies of the Lord, he took awei also hiy placis and wodis fro Juda.⁶ And his heart was lifted up in the ways of Yahweh: and furthermore he took away the high places and the Asherim out of Judah.⁶ And his heart was lifted up in the ways of the LORD: moreover he took away the high places and groves out of Judah.⁶ And his heart took delight in the ways of the LORD; moreover he removed the high places and wooden images from Judah. ⁶ He was deeply committed to^[b] the ways of the Lord. He removed the pagan shrines and Asherah poles from Judah. ⁶ He was strong in his heart in the ways of the Lord. And he took the high places and the false goddess Asherah out of Judah again. ⁶ His heart was courageous in the ways of the Lord; and furthermore he removed the high places and the sacred poles^[b] from Judah.⁶ And his heart was encouraged, in the ways of Yahweh, - and he, yet further, took away the high places and the Sacred Stems, out of Judah.⁶ And when his heart had taken courage for the ways of the Lord, he took away also the high places and the groves out of Juda.⁶ His heart was courageous in the ways of the LORD; and furthermore he took the high places and the Ashe'rim out of Judah.⁶ and his heart is high in the ways of Jehovah, and again he hath turned aside the high places and the shrines out of Judah.⁶ and his heart is high in the ways of YHWH, and again he has turned aside the high places and the Asherim out of Judah.^6 (F1)He took great pride in the ways of the LORD and again ^(C1)removed the high places and the Asherim from Judah.

Jehoshaphat’s Educational Plan

⁷ In the third year of his reign, Jehoshaphat sent his officials—Ben-hail,^(F1) Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel, and Micaiah—to teach in the cities of Judah.^{(C1) 7} Also in the third year of his reign he sent his princes, even Ben-Hayil, and `Ovadyah, and Zekharyah, and Netan'el, and Mikhayahu, to teach in the cities of Yehudah;

⁷ Also in the third year of his reign he sent to his princes, even to Benhail, and to Obadiah, and to Zechariah, and to Nethaneel, and to Michaiah, to teach in the cities of Judah.
