Elijah Announces Famine

¹ Now Elijah^(C1) the Tishbite, from the Gilead settlers,^(F1)(C2) said to Ahab, “As the Lord God of Israel lives,^(C3) in whose presence I stand, there will be no dew or rain during these years except by my command!” ^(C4)

¹ Eliyah the Tishbi, who was of the sojourners of Gil`ad, said to Ach'av, As the LORD, the God of Yisra'el, lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.

¹ And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the Lord God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.

Elijah Predicts a Drought

¹ Now Elijah the Tishbite, of ^(a)Tishbe^[a] in Gilead, said to Ahab, ^(b)"As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, ^(c)before whom I stand, ^(d)there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word."

Elijah Stops the Rain

¹ Now Elijah the Tishbite was a prophet from the settlers in Gilead. "I serve the Lord, the God of Israel," Elijah said to Ahab. "As surely as the Lord lives, no rain or dew will fall during the next few years unless I command it."

¹ Elijah the Tishbite, from Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, "As certainly as the Lord God of Israel lives (whom I serve), there will be no dew or rain in the years ahead unless I give the command."

¹ Now Elijah the Tishbite, who was of ^(F1)(C1)the settlers of Gilead, said to Ahab, "^(C2)As Yahweh, the God of Israel, lives, before whom I stand, surely ^(C3)there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word."

Elijah Stops the Rain

¹ Elijah was a prophet from Tishbe in Gilead.^[a] One day he went to King Ahab and said, "I'm a servant of the living Lord, the God of Israel. And I swear in his name that it won't rain until I say so. There won't even be any dew on the ground."

¹ Eliyahu from Tishbe, an inhabitant of Gil‘ad, said to Ach'av, "As Adonai the God of Isra'el lives, before whom I stand, there will be neither rain nor dew in the years ahead unless I say so."

Elijah and the Time Without Rain

¹ Elijah was a prophet from the town of Tishbe in Gilead. He said to King Ahab, "I serve the Lord, the God of Israel. By his power, I promise that no dew or rain will fall for the next few years. The rain will fall only when I command it to fall."

Elijah and the Drought

^1 (a)A prophet named Elijah, from Tishbe in Gilead, said to King Ahab, "In the name of the Lord, the living God of Israel, whom I serve, I tell you that there will be no dew or rain for the next two or three years until I say so."

The Prophet Elijah Arises

¹ Elijah the Tishbite from Tishbe of Gilead said to Ahab, "As Yahweh lives,^[a] the God of Israel before whom I stand, there shall surely not be dew nor rain these years except by my command."^[b]

¹ And Elijah the Tishbite, of the sojourners of Gilead, said to Ahab, As Jehovah the God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall be no dew nor rain these years, except according to my word.

¹ And Elias ye The?bite one of the inhabiters of Gilead, saide vnto Achab: As truly as the LORDE God of Israel lyueth, whose seruaunt I am, there shal nether rayne ner dew come this yeare, excepte I speake it.

The Ravens Feed Elijah

¹ Now Elijah the Tishbite, who was among the settlers of Gilead^(a), said to Ahab, “As surely as the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, I stand before Him, and in these years there will be neither dew nor rain except at my word!”

¹ And Elie `of Thesbi, of the dwelleris of Galaad, seide to Achab, The Lord God of Israel lyueth, in whos siyt Y stonde, deeu and reyn schal not be in these yeeris, no but bi the wordis of my mouth.

¹ And Elijah the Tishbite, of the inhabitants of Gilead, saith unto Ahab, `Jehovah, God of Israel, liveth, before whom I have stood, there is not these years dew and rain, except according to my word.'

¹ Now Elijah, who was from Tishbe in Gilead, told King Ahab, "As surely as the Lord, the God of Israel, lives—the God I serve—there will be no dew or rain during the next few years until I give the word!"

Elijah Fed by Ravens

¹ Now Elijah the Tishbite, of the people who were staying in Gilead, said to Ahab, "As the Lord the God of Israel lives, before Whom I stand, for sure there will be no rain or water on the grass in the early morning these years, except by my word."

¹ Then said Elijah the Tishbite, of Tishbe in Gilead, unto Ahab, By the life of Yahweh, God of Israel, before whom I stand, there shall not, these two years, be either dew or rain, - save at the bidding of my word.

¹ And Elias the Thesbite, of the inhabitants of Galaad, said to Achab: As the Lord liveth, the God of Israel, in whose sight I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to the words of my mouth.

¹ Now Eli'jah the Tishbite, of Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, "As the LORD the God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word."

¹ And Elijah the Tishbite, of the inhabitants of Gilead, says to Ahab, "YHWH, God of Israel, lives, before whom I have stood, there is not dew and rain these years, except according to my word."

¹ And then this happened: Elijah the Tishbite, from among the settlers of Gilead, confronted Ahab: "As surely as God lives, the God of Israel before whom I stand in obedient service, the next years are going to see a total drought—not a drop of dew or rain unless I say otherwise."

Elijah Predicts Drought

¹ Now Elijah the Tishbite, who was of ^(F1)(C1)the settlers of Gilead, said to Ahab, "^(C2)As the LORD, the God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, surely ^(C3)there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word."

² Then the word of the Lord came to him: ² The word of the LORD came to him, saying,

² Then the Lord said to Elijah, ² And the word of the Lord came to him, saying, ² The word of the Lord came to him, saying, ² Then came the word of Yahweh unto him, saying:² And the word of the Lord came to him, saying:² And the word of the LORD came to him,² And the word of YHWH is to him, saying,^2-4 God then told Elijah, "Get out of here, and fast. Head east and hide out at the Kerith Ravine on the other side of the Jordan River. You can drink fresh water from the brook; I've ordered the ravens to feed you."² The word of the LORD came to him, saying,³ “Leave here, turn eastward, and hide^(C1) at the Wadi Cherith where it enters the Jordan. ³ Get you hence, and turn you eastward, and hide yourself by the brook Kerit, that is before the Yarden.

³ Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan. ³ "Depart from here and turn eastward and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, which is east of the Jordan. ³ "Leave this place and go east and hide near Kerith Ravine east of the Jordan River. ³ "Leave here and travel eastward. Hide out in the Kerith Valley near the Jordan. ³ "Go from here and turn eastward and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, which is east of the Jordan River.³ "Go away from here and turn eastward, and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, which is ^(F1)east of the Jordan.³ Go hence, and turne thee Eastwarde, and hide thy selfe in the riuer Cherith, that is ouer against Iorden,³ "Go away from here and turn eastward, and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, which is ^(F1)east of the Jordan. ³ "Leave and go across the Jordan River so you can hide near Cherith Creek. ³ "Leave here, turn to the east, and hide in Vadi K'rit near the Yarden.

³ Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the torrent Cherith, which is before the Jordan. ³ "Leave this place and go east. Hide near Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan River.³ Depart from here and turn eastward and hide yourself by the brook of Cherith that is before the Jordan. ³ "Leave this place and go east and hide yourself near Cherith Brook, east of the Jordan. ³ "Go from this place and turn to the east; you must hide yourself in the Wadi^[c] Kerith which faces the Jordan.^{[d] 3} Go away from here; and you shall turn eastward and shall hide by the torrent Cherith, that is before Jordan.³ Get the hence, and turne the towarde the east, and hyde the by the ryuer Crith, which is ouer agaynst Iordane, ³ Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before the Jordan. ³ Go from here in the direction of the east, and keep yourself in a secret place by the stream Cherith, east of Jordan.³ Get thee hence, & turne thee eastward, and hide thy selfe in the brooke Cherith, that is, it that lyeth before Iordane.³ 'Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before the Jordan.³ Get thee hence, and turne thee Eastward, and hide thy selfe by the brooke Cherith, that is before Iordane. ³ Depart hence eastward, and hide thee by the brook of Chorrath, that is before Jordan. ³ Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan. ³ “Leave here, turn eastward, and hide yourself by the Brook Cherith, east of the Jordan^(a).³ Go thou awey fro hennus, and go ayens the eest, and be thou hid in the stronde of Carith, which is ayens Jordan,³ `Go from this [place]; and thou hast turned for thee eastward, and been hidden by the brook Cherith, that [is] on the front of the Jordan,³ Go from here, and you turn eastward, and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, that is before the Jordan.³ Depart hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that [is] before Jordan.³ Get you hence, and turn you eastward, and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, that is before the Jordan. ³ "Get away from here and turn eastward, and hide by the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan. ³ "Go to the east and hide by Kerith Brook, near where it enters the Jordan River. ³ "Leave here and turn east. Hide yourself by the river Cherith, east of the Jordan. ³ "Go from here and turn eastward, and hide yourself by the Wadi Cherith, which is east of the Jordan. ³ Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, - and hide thyself in the ravine of Cherith, which faceth the Jordan;³ Get thee hence, and go towards the east, and hide thyself by the torrent of Carith, which is over against the Jordan;³ "Depart from here and turn eastward, and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, that is east of the Jordan.³ "Go from this [place]; and you have turned for yourself eastward, and been hidden by the Brook of Cherith that [is] on the front of the Jordan,³ "Go away from here and turn eastward, and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, which is ^(F1)east of the Jordan.⁴ You are to drink from the wadi. I have commanded the ravens^(C1) to provide for you there.”

⁴ And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there. ⁴ You shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there." ⁴ You may drink from the stream, and I have commanded ravens to bring you food there." ⁴ Drink from the stream; I have already told the ravens to bring you food there." ⁴ "You shall drink from the brook, and ^(C1)I have commanded the ravens to sustain you there with food."⁴ "And it shall be that you will drink from the brook, and ^(C1)I have commanded the ravens to provide food for you there."⁴ And thou shalt drinke of the riuer: and I haue comanded the rauens to feede thee there.⁴ "And it will be that you will drink of the brook, and ^(C1)I have commanded the ravens to sustain you there." ⁴ You can drink water from the creek, and eat the food I've told the ravens to bring you." ⁴ You are to drink from the stream, and I have ordered the ravens to feed you there."

⁴ And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the torrent; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there. ⁴ You can get your water from that stream, and I have commanded ravens to bring food to you there."⁴ And you shall drink from the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there. ⁴ The brook will supply you with water to drink, and I have commanded ravens to bring you food there." ⁴ It shall be that you shall drink from the wadi,^[e] and I have commanded the crows to sustain you there." ⁴ And it shall be, you shall drink of the torrent; and I shall command the ravens to feed you there.⁴ and thou shalt drynke of the ryuer: and I haue commaunded the rauens, that they shal fede the there. ⁴ And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there. ⁴ The water of the stream will be your drink, and by my orders the ravens will give you food there.⁴ Thou shalt drinke of the ryuer, and I haue commaunded the rauens to feede thee there.⁴ And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.'⁴ And it shall bee, that thou shalt drinke of the brooke, and I haue commanded the rauens to feed thee there. ⁴ And it shall be that thou shalt drink water of the brook, and I will charge the ravens to feed thee there. ⁴ And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there. ⁴ And you are to drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.”⁴ and there thou schalt drynke of the stronde; and Y comaundide to crowis, that thei feede thee there.⁴ and it hath been, from the brook thou dost drink, and the ravens I have commanded to sustain thee there.'⁴ And it shall be, that you shall drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.⁴ And it shall be, [that] thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.⁴ It shall be, that you shall drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there. ⁴ And it will be that you shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there." ⁴ Drink from the brook and eat what the ravens bring you, for I have commanded them to bring you food." ⁴ You will drink from the river. And I have told the ravens to bring food to you there." ⁴ You shall drink from the wadi, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there." ⁴ and it shall be that, of the torrent, shalt thou drink, - and, the ravens, have I commanded to sustain thee, there.⁴ And there thou shalt drink of the torrent: and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.⁴ You shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there."⁴ and it has been [that] you drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to sustain you there."⁴ "It shall be that you will drink of the brook, and ^(C1)I have commanded the ravens to provide for you there."

⁵ So he proceeded to do what the Lord commanded. Elijah left and lived at the Wadi Cherith where it enters the Jordan. ⁵ So he went and did according to the word of the LORD; for he went and lived by the brook Kerit, that is before the Yarden.

⁵ So he went and did according unto the word of the Lord: for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan. ⁵ So he went and did according to the word of the Lord. He went and lived by the brook Cherith that is east of the Jordan. ⁵ So Elijah did what the Lord said; he went to Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan, and lived there. ⁵ So he did as the Lord told him; he went and lived in the Kerith Valley near the Jordan. ⁵ So he went and did in accordance with the word of the LORD; he went and lived by the brook Cherith, which is east of the Jordan.⁵ So he went and did everything according to the word of the LORD, for he went and lived by the brook Cherith, which is ^(F1)east of the Jordan.⁵ So he went & did according vnto the word of the Lord: for he went, and remained by the riuer Cherith that is ouer against Iorden.⁵ So he went and did according to the word of Yahweh, for he went and lived by the brook Cherith, which is ^(F1)east of the Jordan.

⁵ Elijah obeyed the Lord and went to live near Cherith Creek. ⁵ So he went and acted according to the word of Adonai — he went and lived in Vadi K'rit near the Yarden.

⁵ And he went and did according to the word of Jehovah; he went and abode by the torrent Cherith, which is before the Jordan. ⁵ So Elijah did what the Lord told him to do. He went to live near Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan River.⁵ So he went and did according to the word of the LORD; for he went and dwelt by the brook of Cherith that is before the Jordan.

⁵ Elijah obeyed the Lord's command, and went and stayed by Cherith Brook. ⁵ So he went and did according to the word of Yahweh. He went and stayed in the Wadi^[f] Kerith which faces the Jordan.^{[g] 5} And he went and did according to the Word of Jehovah; for he went and lived by the torrent Cherith, that is before Jordan.⁵ He departed, and dyd acordinge to the worde of the LORDE, and wente his waye, and sat him downe by the ryuer Crith, which is ouer agaynst Iordane. ⁵ So he went and did according unto the word of Jehovah; for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before the Jordan. ⁵ So he went and did as the Lord said, living by the stream Cherith, east of Jordan.⁵ And so he went, and did according vnto the word of the Lorde: for he went, and dwelt by the brooke Cherith that is before Iordane.⁵ So he went and did according unto the word of the LORD; for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before the Jordan.⁵ So hee went, and did according vnto the word of the Lord: for hee went and dwelt by the brooke Cherith, that is before Iordane. ⁵ And Eliu did according to the word of the Lord, and he sat by the brook of Chorrath before Jordan. ⁵ So he went and did according unto the word of the LORD: for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan. ⁵ So Elijah did what the LORD had told him, and he went and lived by the Brook Cherith, east of the Jordan.⁵ Therfor he yede, and dide bi the word of the Lord; and whanne he hadde go, he sat in the stronde of Carith, which is ayens Jordan.⁵ And he goeth and doth according to the word of Jehovah, yea, he goeth and dwelleth by the brook Cherith, that [is] on the front of the Jordan,⁵ So he went and did according to the word of Yahweh; for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before the Jordan.⁵ So he went and did according to the word of the LORD: for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that [is] before Jordan.⁵ So he went and did according to the word of Yahweh; for he went and lived by the brook Cherith, that is before the Jordan. ⁵ So he went and did according to the word of the LORD, for he went and stayed by the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan.

⁵ So Elijah did as the Lord told him and camped beside Kerith Brook, east of the Jordan. ⁵ So he went and did what he was told by the word of the Lord. He went and lived by the river Cherith, east of the Jordan. ⁵ So he went and did according to the word of the Lord; he went and lived by the Wadi Cherith, which is east of the Jordan. ⁵ So he went and did, according to the word of Yahweh, - yea he went and dwelt in the ravine of Cherith, which faceth the Jordan.⁵ So he went, and did according to the word of the Lord: and going, he dwelt by the torrent Carith, which is over against the Jordan.⁵ So he went and did according to the word of the LORD; he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith that is east of the Jordan.⁵ And he goes and does according to the word of YHWH, indeed, he goes and dwells by the Brook of Cherith, that [is] on the front of the Jordan,^5-6 Elijah obeyed God's orders. He went and camped in the Kerith canyon on the other side of the Jordan. And sure enough, ravens brought him his meals, both breakfast and supper, and he drank from the brook.⁵ So he went and did according to the word of the LORD, for he went and lived by the brook Cherith, which is ^(F1)east of the Jordan.⁶ The ravens kept bringing him bread and meat in the morning and in the evening,^(C1) and he would drink from the wadi. ⁶ The ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook.
