Cross-References
Jacob answered, "You know that I have worked hard for you, and your flocks have grown while I cared for them.
He said to them, "I have seen that your father is not as friendly with me as he used to be, but the God of my father has been with me.
When Laban said, ‘You can have all the speckled animals as your pay,' all the animals gave birth to speckled young ones. But when he said, ‘You can have all the streaked animals as your pay,' all the flocks gave birth to streaked babies.
So God has taken the animals away from your father and has given them to me.
"I had a dream during the season when the flocks were mating. I saw that the only male goats who were mating were streaked, speckled, or spotted.
Three days later Laban learned that Jacob had run away,
So Laban caught up with Jacob. Now Jacob had made his camp in the mountains, so Laban and his relatives set up their camp in the mountains of Gilead.
I have worked for you now for twenty years. During all that time none of the lambs and kids died during birth, and I have not eaten any of the male sheep from your flocks.
But the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac, was with me. Otherwise, you would have sent me away with nothing. But he saw the trouble I had and the hard work I did, and last night he corrected you."
Slaves, yield to the authority of your masters with all respect, not only those who are good and kind, but also those who are dishonest.
Gill's Notes on the Bible
Be strong and of a good courage,.... The Septuagint version is,
"play the men, and be strong;''
be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might, trusting and relying on him that goes before you; and so take heart, and be of good courage, and act the manly part; the apostle seems to refer to this passage, 1 Corinthians 16:13;
fear not, nor be afraid of them; their enemies, though so numerous, so mighty, and some of them of a gigantic stature, and their cities strong and well fenced:
for the Lord thy God, he [it is] that doth go with thee: in comparison of whom, numbers of men, their strength of body, and fortified places, signify nothing:
he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee; not fail to fulfil his promises to them, not leave them till he had given them complete victory over their enemies, put them into the possession of their land, and settled them in it. This promise, though made to literal Israel, belongs to the spiritual Israel of God, and is made good to every true believer in the Lord; see Hebrews 13:5.
Clarke's Notes on the Bible
Verse Deuteronomy 31:6. Be strong — חזקו chizku, the same word that is used Exodus 4:21; Exodus 9:15, for hardening Pharaoh's heart. See the notes there. The Septuagint, in this and the following verse, have, Ανδριζου και ισχυε, Play the man, and be strong; and from this St. Paul seems to have borrowed his ideas, 1 Corinthians 16:13: Στηκετε εν τῃ πιστει· ανδριζεσθε, κρατιουσθε: Stand firm in the faith; play the man - act like heroes; be vigorous.
