Chapter 16
Paul's Commendation of Phoebe
1 I commend to you(a) our sister Phoebe, who is a servant[a] of the church in Cenchreae.(b) 2 So you should welcome her in the Lord(c) in a manner worthy of the saints and assist her in whatever matter she may require your help. For indeed she has been a benefactor of many—and of me also.
Greeting to Roman Christians
3 Give my greetings to Prisca[b] and Aquila,(d) my coworkers in(e) Christ Jesus,(f)
4 who risked their own necks for my life. Not only do I thank them, but so do all the Gentile churches.
5 Greet also the church that meets in their home.(g)
Greet my dear friend Epaenetus, who is the first convert[c](h) to Christ from Asia.[d](i)
6 Greet Mary,[e] who has worked very hard for you.[f]
7 Greet Andronicus and Junia,[g] my fellow countrymen(j) and fellow prisoners.(k) They are noteworthy in the eyes of the apostles,[h][i] and they were also in Christ before me.
8 Greet Ampliatus, my dear friend in the Lord.
9 Greet Urbanus, our coworker in Christ, and my dear friend Stachys.
10 Greet Apelles, who is approved in Christ.
Greet those who belong to the household of Aristobulus.(l)
11 Greet Herodion, my fellow countryman.
Greet those who belong to the household of Narcissus who are in the Lord.
12 Greet Tryphaena and Tryphosa, who have worked hard in the Lord.
Greet my dear friend Persis, who has worked very hard in the Lord.
13 Greet Rufus,(m) chosen in the Lord; also his mother—and mine.
14 Greet Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermes, Patrobas, Hermas, and the brothers who are with them.
15 Greet Philologus and Julia, Nereus and his sister, and Olympas, and all the saints who are with them.(n)
16 Greet one another with a holy kiss.(o)
All the churches of Christ send you greetings.
Warning against Divisive People
17 Now I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause dissensions and obstacles contrary to the doctrine you have learned.(p) Avoid them,(q) 18 for such people do not serve our Lord Christ(r) but their own appetites.[j](s) They deceive the hearts of the unsuspecting with smooth talk and flattering words.(t)
Paul's Gracious Conclusion
19 The report of your obedience has reached everyone.(u) Therefore I rejoice over you. But I want you to be wise about what is good, yet innocent about what is evil.(v) 20 The God of peace(w) will soon crush Satan(x) under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.(y)
21 Timothy,(z) my coworker, and Lucius,(aa) Jason,(ab) and Sosipater,(ac) my fellow countrymen, greet you.
22 I Tertius, who wrote this letter,(ad) greet you in the Lord.[k]
23 Gaius,(ae) who is host to me and to the whole church, greets you. Erastus,(af) the city treasurer, and our brother Quartus greet you.

Glory to God
25 Now to Him who has power to strengthen you(ag) according to my gospel and the proclamation about Jesus Christ,(ah) according to the revelation of the mystery kept silent(ai) for long ages(aj) 26 but now revealed and made known through the prophetic Scriptures,(ak) according to the command of the eternal God to advance the obedience of faith[m](al) among all nations— 27 to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ—to Him be the glory forever Amen.

Chapter 1
Greeting
1 Paul,(a) called as an apostle(b) of Christ Jesus by God's will,(c) and Sosthenes our brother:(d)
2 To God's church at Corinth,(e) to those who are sanctified(f) in Christ Jesus and called(g) as saints, with all those in every place who call on the name(h) of Jesus Christ our Lord—both their Lord and ours.
3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father(i) and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Thanksgiving
4 I always thank(j) my God for you because of God's grace given to you in Christ Jesus, 5 that by Him you were enriched(k) in everything—in all speech and all knowledge.(l) 6 In this way, the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you,(m) 7 so that you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait(n) for the revelation(o) of our Lord Jesus Christ. 8 He will also strengthen you to the end,(p) so that you will be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.(q) 9 God is faithful;(r) you were called by Him(s) into fellowship with His Son,(t) Jesus Christ our Lord.
Divisions at Corinth
10 Now I urge you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree in what you say, that there be no divisions among you, and that you be united with the same understanding and the same conviction. 11 For it has been reported to me about you, my brothers, by members of Chloe's household, that there is rivalry(u) among you. 12 What I am saying is this: Each of you says, "I'm with Paul," or "I'm with Apollos,"(v) or "I'm with Cephas,"(w) or "I'm with Christ."(x) 13 Is Christ divided?(y) Was it Paul who was crucified for you? Or were you baptized in Paul's name? 14 I thank God[a][b] that I baptized none of you except Crispus(z) and Gaius,(aa) 15 so that no one can say you were baptized in my name. 16 I did, in fact, baptize the household(ab) of Stephanas;(ac) beyond that, I don't know if I baptized anyone else. 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to evangelize—not with clever words, so that the cross(ad) of Christ will not be emptied of its effect.
Christ the Power and Wisdom of God
18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but it is God's power to us who are being saved.(ae) 19 For it is written:
I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
and I will set aside the understanding of the experts.

20 Where is the philosopher?[d] Where is the scholar? Where is the debater of this age?(ag) Hasn't God made the world's wisdom foolish? 21 For since, in God's wisdom, the world did not know God through wisdom, God was pleased to save those who believe through the foolishness of the message preached. 22 For the Jews ask for signs(ah) and the Greeks seek wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified,(ai) a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Gentiles.[e] 24 Yet to those who are called,(aj) both Jews and Greeks, Christ is God's power and God's wisdom, 25 because God's foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God's weakness is stronger than human strength.
Boasting Only in the Lord
26 Brothers, consider your calling: Not many are wise from a human perspective,[f] not many powerful,(ak) not many of noble birth. 27 Instead, God has chosen(al) what is foolish in the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen what is weak in the world to shame the strong. 28 God has chosen what is insignificant and despised in the world(am)—what is viewed as nothing—to bring to nothing what is viewed as something, 29 so that no one[g] can boast in His presence.(an) 30 But it is from Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who became God-given wisdom for us—our righteousness,(ao) sanctification,(ap) and redemption,(aq) 31 in order that, as it is written:(ar) The one who boasts must boast in the Lord. (as)[h]
Chapter 2
Paul's Proclamation
1 When I came to you, brothers, announcing the testimony[a] of God to you, I did not come with brilliance(a) of speech(b) or wisdom. 2 For I didn't think it was a good idea to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.(c) 3 I came to you in weakness,(d) in fear,(e) and in much trembling.(f) 4 My speech(g) and my proclamation were not with persuasive(h) words of wisdom[b] but with a powerful demonstration by the Spirit, 5 so that your faith might not be based on men's wisdom but on God's power.(i)
Spiritual Wisdom
6 However, we do speak a wisdom among the mature,(j) but not a wisdom of this age, or of the rulers(k) of this age, who are coming to nothing.(l) 7 On the contrary, we speak God's hidden wisdom in a mystery, a wisdom God predestined(m) before the ages for our glory.(n) 8 None of the rulers of this age knew this wisdom, for if they had known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.(o) 9 But as it is written:
What eye did not see and ear did not hear,
and what never entered the human mind—
God prepared this for those who love Him.

10 Now God has revealed these things to us by the Spirit, for the Spirit searches everything,(q) even the depths of God.(r) 11 For who among men knows the thoughts[d] of a man except the spirit(s) of the man that is in him? In the same way, no one knows(t) the thoughts[e] of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who comes from God, so that we may understand what has been freely given to us by God. 13 We also speak these things, not in words(u) taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual things to spiritual people.[f] 14 But the unbeliever[g] does not welcome what comes from God's Spirit, because it is foolishness to him; he is not able to understand it since it is evaluated[h] spiritually. 15 The spiritual person, however, can evaluate[i] everything, yet he himself cannot be evaluated[j] by anyone. 16 For
who has known the Lord's mind,
that he may instruct Him?

But we have the mind of Christ.(w)
Chapter 3
The Problem of Immaturity
1 Brothers, I was not able to speak to you as spiritual people but as people of the flesh, as babies in Christ.(a) 2 I gave you milk to drink, not solid food, because you were not yet ready for it. In fact, you are still not ready, 3 because you are still fleshly. For since there is envy(b) and strife[a](c) among you, are you not fleshly and living like unbelievers?[b] 4 For whenever someone says, "I'm with Paul," and another, "I'm with Apollos,"(d) are you not unspiritual people?[c][d]
The Role of God's Servants
5 What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? They are servants through whom you believed, and each has the role the Lord has given. 6 I planted,(e) Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. 8 Now the one planting and the one watering are one in purpose, and each will receive his own reward according to his own labor. 9 For we are God's coworkers.[e] You are God's field, God's building.(f) 10 According to God's grace that was given to me, I have laid a foundation as a skilled master builder, and another builds on it. But each one must be careful how he builds on it. 11 For no one can lay any other foundation(g) than what has been laid down. That foundation is Jesus Christ. 12 If anyone builds on that foundation with gold, silver,(h) costly stones,(i) wood, hay, or straw, 13 each one's work will become obvious, for the day[f] will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire;(j) the fire will test the quality of each one's work.(k) 14 If anyone's work that he has built survives, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone's work is burned up, it will be lost, but he will be saved;(l) yet it will be like an escape through fire.[g](m)
16 Don't you yourselves know that you are God's sanctuary(n) and that the Spirit of God lives in you?(o) 17 If anyone destroys God's sanctuary, God will destroy him;(p) for God's sanctuary is holy,(q) and that is what you are.
The Folly of Human Wisdom
18 No one should deceive(r) himself. If anyone among you thinks he is wise in this age,(s) he must become foolish(t) so that he can become wise.(u) 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness(v) with God, since it is written:(w) He catches the wise in their craftiness ;(x)[h] 20 and again, The Lord knows that the reasonings (y) of the wise are meaningless. (z)[i] 21 So no one should boast in human leaders, for everything is yours(aa)— 22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas(ab) or the world or life(ac) or death(ad) or things present or things to come(ae)—everything is yours, 23 and you belong to Christ,(af) and Christ belongs to God.
Chapter 4
The Faithful Manager
1 A person should consider us in this way: as servants(a) of Christ and managers(b) of God's mysteries.(c) 2 In this regard, it is expected of managers that each one of them be found faithful.(d) 3 It is of little(e) importance to me that I should be evaluated(f) by you or by any human court.[a] In fact, I don't even evaluate myself. 4 For I am not conscious of anything against myself, but I am not justified(g) by this. The One who evaluates me is the Lord. 5 Therefore don't judge(h) anything prematurely, before the Lord comes,(i) who will both bring to light what is hidden in darkness and reveal the intentions of the hearts. And then praise will come to each one from God.(j)
The Apostles' Example of Humility
6 Now, brothers,(k) I have applied these things to myself and Apollos(l) for your benefit, so that you may learn from us the saying: "Nothing beyond what is written."[b] The purpose is that none of you will be inflated with pride in favor of one person over another. 7 For who makes you so superior? What do you have that you didn't receive? If, in fact, you did receive it, why do you boast as if you hadn't received it? 8 You are already full! You are already rich! You have begun to reign as kings without us—and I wish you did reign, so that we could also reign with you! 9 For I think God has displayed us, the apostles, in last place, like men condemned to die: We have become a spectacle to the world and to angels and to men. 10 We are fools for Christ, but you are wise in Christ!(m) We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, but we are dishonored! 11 Up to the present hour we are both hungry and thirsty; we are poorly clothed, roughly treated, homeless; 12 we labor, working(n) with our own hands.(o) When we are reviled, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it; 13 when we are slandered, we respond graciously. Even now, we are like the world's garbage, like the dirt everyone scrapes off their sandals.(p)
