I. שׁמשׁ (√ of following; Biblical Hebrew שׁמשׁ, שֶׁ֫מֶשׁ).
שֶׁמֶשׁ comm. (m. Psalms 104:19 f. Genesis 15:17), with Suff. שִׁמְשִׁי
(1) the sun (Arabic شَمْسُ, Syr. ܫܶܡܫܐܳ, a primitive word, found under the radical letters sm, sr, sn, sl, in very many languages, compare the old Germ. Summi (whence Summer, Sommer), Sanscr. sura, surja, Germ. Sunne, Sonne, Eng. sun, Lat. sol, and with an aspirate put for a sibilant Pehlev. hûr, Pers. خور, Gr. ἥλιος, see Merian, Etude Comparative des Langues, p. 66, 67), תַּחַת הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ under the sun, i.e. on earth, a usual phrase in the book of Ecclesiastes 1:3,, 14 2:11, 18, 19, 22 4:1,,, 15 and frequently. לִפְנֵי שֶׁמֶשׁ in the sunshine, Job 8:16 (but as to Psalms 72:17, see לִפְנֵי No. 1, p. 680, A ), לְעֵינֵי הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ before the sun, i.e. in the presence of the sun, with the sun, as it were, looking on, 2 Samuel 12:11. The sun-rise is spoken of with the verbs יָצָא, זָרַח, as to the setting, the verb בּוֹא. Metaph. God is said to be any one’s sun, Psalms 84:12.
(2) pl. שְׁמָשׁוֹת battlements (as if suns, sun-beams), Isaiah 54:12. LXX. ἐπάλξεις.
