פֶּרֶץ m. pl. ־ִים Amos 4:3, and וֹ Ezekiel 13:5.
(1) rupture, breach of a wall, 1 Kings 11:27 Isaiah 30:13 Amos 4:3; Job 30:14, בְּפֶרֶץ רָתָב יֶאֱתָיוּן rightly rendered by the Vulg. quasi rupto muro irruerunt, a metaphor, taken from besiegers who rush into a city through breaches in the wall, in great numbers and with great violence. From the same idea is the phrase עָמַר בַּפֶרֶץ to stand in the breach, to repel the enemy, which would be the act of the bravest soldiers, who would expose their lives to most imminent peril, Ezekiel 22:30 (compare Ezekiel 13:5); Psalms 106:23.
(2) dispersion
(a) of enemies, slaughter, Judges 21:15; Psalms 144:14. Hence פֶּרֶץ עֻוָּא pr.n. of a place, 2 Samuel 6:8; 1 Chronicles 13:11.
(b) a dispersion of water, a diffusion, 2 Samuel 5:20.
(3) an irruption, invasion, violence; Job 16:14, “he rusheth upon me פֶּרֶץ עַל פְּנֵי פֶרֶץ violence upon violence.”
