Pu`al Participle feminine covered, encrusted, construct מְעֻלֶּפֶת Song of Solomon 5:14 his belly if ivory encrusted with sapphires. Perfect 3 plural בָּנַיִךְ עֻלְּפוּ Isaiah 51:20 thy sons are enshrouded, enwrapped, i.e. their senses obscured = have swooned away; so also Ezekiel 31:15, reading 3 feminine singular עֻלָּ֑פָה for substantive עֻלְמֶּה (Kö ii. 1,118), all the trees have fainted for (עַל) him (so ᵐ5ᵑ6 ᵑ9 Hi Co and others).
Hithpa`el enwrap oneself, Imperfect 3 feminine singular וַתִּתְעַלָּ֑ף Genesis 38:14 (J); = swoon away, 3 masculine singular וַיִּתְעַלָּ֑ף Jonah 4:8; 3 feminine plural תִּתְעַלַּפְנָה Amos 8:13.
עָלַף not used in Kal; pr. to cover, to wrap up. (Arab. غَلَفَ, Gr. καλύπτω. Comp. עוּף No. 1.)
Pual
(1) to be covered, Song of Solomon 5:14.
(2) to languish, to faint (pr. to be covered with darkness, see synn. עָטָה, עָטַף ), Isaiah 51:20.
Hithpael
(1) to vail oneself, Genesis 38:14.
(2) i.q. Pual No. 2, to faint, to languish with heat, Jonah 4:8 with thirst, Amos 8:13.
