מִקְנֶה m. [as cattle, construed with a fem. verb, Exodus 24:18. App.], (from the root קָנָה to possess, to buy), const. מִקְנֵה; with suff. מִקְנִי, מִקְנְךָ, מִקְנֵהוּ, מִקְנֵנוּ; also with suffixes which appear to be plurals (but see under מַעֲשֶׂה, מַרְאֶה ), מִקְנַי Numbers 20:19 מִקְנֶיךָ Isaiah 30:23 and every where מִקְנֵיבֶם. Genesis 47:16; Joshua 1:14 מִקְנֵכֶם Deuteronomy 3:19, and מִקְנֵיהֶם Genesis 34:23, 36:7 46:6 (never מִקְנְכֶם, מִקְנָם).
(1) prop. possession, wealth, always used of cattle, in which alone the riches of Nomades consist: (compare Greek κτῆνος cattle, prop. i.q. κτῆμα possession, ὂϊς, i.q. ovis, and Lat. ops, whence opilio; plur. opes, Arabic مَالُ, Syriac ܢܶܟܣܝܺܢ wealth and sheep; also the Germ. bas Gut, used in Holstein of flocks; see Voss, on Virg. Ecl. x. 19); and this is properly used only of sheep and oxen (צֹאן וּבָקָר), beasts of burden being excepted; Genesis 26:14, מִקְנֵה צֹאן וּמִקְנֵה בָקָר; Genesis 47:17, “and Joseph gave them food בַּסּוּסִים וּבְמִקְנֵה הַצֹּאן וּבְמִקְנֵה חַבָּקָר וּבַחֲמֹרִים.” Asses and camels are more rarely comprehended in this word, Job 1:3 אַנְשֵׁי מִקְנֶה men who look after cattle, Genesis 46:32, 34 Genesis 46:34אֶרֶץ מִקְנֶה land fit for feeding cattle, Numbers 32:1, Numbers 32:5.
