לֹט (in the Samaritan copy, and many Hebrew MSS. written fully לוֹט), m. Genesis 37:25, 43:11 ledum, ladanum, Gr. λῆδον, λήδανον, λάδανον, a fragrant resinous gum, collected from the leaves of a plant growing in the island of Crete (κίστος, Cistus ladanifera), (Herod. iii. 112), so called from covering over, hiding (root לוּט), comp. כֹּפֶר pitch from the root כָּפַר.-LXX., Vulg., render it στακτή, Syr. and Chald. pistacia, Saad. chesnut. See Celsii Hierob. t. i. p. 280-288; comp. J. D. Michaëlis, Supplemm. p. 1424.
