 לֹט noun [masculine] myrrh, or 'ladanum' (Greek), an aromatic gum exuded by leaves of cistus-rose, cistus villosus, Tristr FFP, 235, and especially Nat. Hist. Bib., 458 ff.; Ri HWB 897, compare Löw No. 79 Di Genesis 37:25 Now Archaeology i. 64 (Sabean לדן, SabDenkm84; Assyrian ladunu (from Damascus) compare Schr COT Genesis 37:25, MBAk. 1881, pp. 413ff.; Arabic , whence Greek λήδανον, λάδανον Hdt iii. 112); — וּצְרִי וָלֹט נְכאֹת Genesis 37:25, merchandise of Ishmaelite caravan, compare Genesis 43:11, present to Joseph (both J; ᵐ5 στακτή).

לֹט (in the Samaritan copy, and many Hebrew MSS. written fully לוֹט), m. Genesis 37:25, 43:11 ledum, ladanum, Gr. λῆδον, λήδανον, λάδανον, a fragrant resinous gum, collected from the leaves of a plant growing in the island of Crete (κίστος, Cistus ladanifera), (Herod. iii. 112), so called from covering over, hiding (root לוּט), comp. כֹּפֶר pitch from the root כָּפַר.-LXX., Vulg., render it στακτή, Syr. and Chald. pistacia, Saad. chesnut. See Celsii Hierob. t. i. p. 280-288; comp. J. D. Michaëlis, Supplemm. p. 1424.
