Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

לְחִי f. in pause לֶ֑חִי; with suff. לֶחֱיוֹ; dual לְחָיַיִם, const. לְחָיִיִ Isaiah 30:28 with suff. לְחָיֶיךָ Ezekiel 29:4 but לְחֵיהֶם Hosea 11:4.

(1) the cheek, so called as being the seat of beauty [“from its fresh colour”]; see the root לָחָה. הִכָּה פ׳ עַל לְחִי and הִכָּה לְחָיִיִ פ׳ to smite any one on the cheek, implies castigation or insult, Mic. 4:14 1 Kings 22:24; Job 16:10 compare Isaiah 50:6; Lamentations 3:30.

(2) jaw-bone, -Judges 15:1517 ; Job 40:26 Psalms 3:8, הִכִּיתָ אֶת־כָּל־אֹיְבַי לְחִי “thou hast broken the jawbone of all my enemies:” an image taken from beasts of prey, which, when their jaw is broken and their teeth extracted, can no longer do harm. Arab. لَحْىُ id., لَحْيَةُ beard.

(3) [Lehi], pr.n. of a place on the borders of the Philistæa, Judges 15:9, 14:19 fully called רָמַת לְחִי the high place, or hill, of the jaw-bone, prob. so called from the series of abrupt rocks, (as single rocks are called teeth, see שֵׁן ; a jaw is found as the name of a mountainous place in the Chaldee pr.n. לְחַיַּת מוֹאָב for Hebr. עָר מוֹאָב, Mich. Suppl. p. 1453); the writer himself [who as being inspired is to be implicitly believed] refers it to the casting away of the jaw-bone, as if it were written רְמַת לְחִי (from the root רָמָה to throw).
