Brown-Driver-Briggs Expanded Definition
יַבֹּק proper name, of a river (√ probably בקק; so Thes after Simonis, Samaritan Di) מַעֲבַר (ה)יבק Genesis 32:23 (where perhaps connected with אבק = יאבק); ׳נַ֫חַל יַבּ Deuteronomy 2:37, הַנַּחַל׳יַבּ Deuteronomy 3:16; Joshua 12:2, יַבֹּק Numbers 21:24 ("" אַרְנֹּן, compare Deuteronomy 3:16; Joshua 12:2), הַיַּבֹּק Judges 11:13,22 (in both "" ארנון); it empties into Jordan from East, in latitude of Shiloh; northern border of Amorites, Numbers 21:24 (see Di), Judges 11:22; in its upper course it runs south to north, hence (west) border of Ammon, Deuteronomy 3:16 (compare Deuteronomy 2:37), Joshua 12:2; modern Wady Zerqa Bd Pal.181.

Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

יַבֹּק Jabbok, pr.n. of a stream Mount Gilead, on the northern border of the Ammonites, flowing into Jordan on the east, now called وادى زرقا Wady Zŭrka, i.e. blue river, Numbers 21:24; Genesis 32:23; Deuteronomy 2:37, 3:16 Joshua 12:2; Judges 11:13. See Burckhardt’s Travels in Syria, p. 598; Germ. trans.; and my note on the place, in which I have rejected the error of Pococke and others, who confounded this stream with the Hieromiax (Arab. يرموك). As to the etymology, Jo. Simonis, in Ohomast. page 315, is not amiss in deriving יַבֹּק from בָּקַק to empty, by a Chaldaism, for יָבֹק; hence pouring out, emptying; Genesis 32:25, this name is however so alluded to as if it were for יְאַבּוֹק from the root אָבַק.
