טַבָּח m. a slayer, hence
(1) a cook, 1 Samuel 9:23, 24 1 Samuel 9:24. Arab. طَبَّاخُ id.
(2) an executioner, hence one of the king’s guard, whose business it was in the East to inflict capital punishments. רַב־טַבָּחִים 2 Kings 25:8, seq.; Jeremiah 39:9, seq.; and שַׂר־הַטַּבָּחִים Genesis 37:36, 39:1 40:3, Genesis 40:4, 41:10, 12 Genesis 41:12, “the captain of the executioners,” i.e. of the body guard; pretty much the same as the Kapijji-Pasha of the modern Turkish court. [“In Egypt he had a public prison in his house, Genesis 40:3 in Babylon, Nebuzaradan who held this office, commanded also a part of the royal army, Jeremiah 39:13, 52:15.” Ges. add.]
טַבָּח Chald. i.q. Hebr. No. 2, an executioner, hence one of the king’s guard, Daniel 2:14.
