 [חָנַק] verb strangle (Late Hebrew id., Aramaic חֲנַק, ; Arabic ); —

Niph`al Imperfect וַיֵּחָנַ֑ק 2 Samuel 17:23 strangled himself (+וַיָּ֫מָת).

Pi`el participle מְחַנֵּק Nahum 2:13 strangle, of lion strangling prey, figurative of Ninevitish king (object not expressed).

Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

חָנַק unused in Kal; properly to be narrow, enge fehn, of the same stock as אָנַק, חָנַךְ, עָנַק (עוּק), and in the western languages, ἄγχω, ἀνάγκη, ango, angustus, enge (Zange, Zwang). Hence

Piel, to strangle, ἄγχω (mürgen), πνίγω, used of a lion, Nahum 2:13. (Arab. خنق, Eth. ኀነቀ፡ Syr. ܚܢܰܩ id.).

Niphal, to hang, or strangle oneself, 2 Samuel 17:23. Hence מַחֲנָק.
