גָּרַף

(1)  to snatch away, to sweep away. (There is something onomatopoetic in this root, both in the letters גר, which convey the notion of scratching, scraping (see under the root גרב ), as well as in the syllable רף; compare rapere, raffen. Arab. جرف to sweep away, to clear off, as mud with a shovel. Conj. II, to carry away, to wear away, as a river part of a bank, جُرْفُ, جُرُفُ a stone worn away by the flow of water. Ethiop. ገሪፋ፡ a drag net. Ch. and Talmudic to sweep. Syr. ܓܪܦܰ, used of water carrying away whatever it meets with.) Once in the Old Test. Judges 5:21, נַחַל קִישׁוֹן גְּרָפָם “the river Kishon carried them away.” LXX ἐζέσυρεν. Vulg. traxit cadavera eorum.

(2) to grasp, whence אֶנְרוֹף the fist; see also מֶנְרָפָה
