Βηθλημ, (indecl) (in Josephus not only so (Antiquities 8, 10, 1), but also Βηθλημη, Βηθλημης, Antiquities 6, 8, 1; 11, 7; (7, 1, 3); ἀπό Βηθλεμων, 5, 2, 8; ἐκ Βηθλημων, 5, 9, 1; (cf. 7, 13; 9, 2)), Bethlehem (לֶחֶם בֵּית house of bread), a little town, named from the fertility of its sort, six Roman miles south of Jerusalem; now Beit Lachm, with about 3,000 ("5,000," Baedeker) inhabitants: Matthew 2:1, 5f, 8, 16; Luke 2:4, 15; John 7:42.
