Vocabulary of the Greek NT

In Syll 226.159 (Olbia, on Euxine—iii/B.C.) the verb ἀχαριστεῖν occurs in the normal sense : see also BGU IV. 1026xxii. 16 (iv/v A.D. magical) τοὺς δὲ ἀπαλλαγέντος (l. -ας ) καὶ ἀχαριστήσαντα [ς ]. In P Grenf I. 52.12 (iii/A.D.) ἀχάριστον = ";antidote"; ";id est sine gratia,"; as a Latin writer in Grenfell’s note explains it, assigning a reason. A poem dated A.D. 94 (Kaibel 618, Rome) is inscribed on the tomb of its precocious author, a boy of eleven : it has the line σπείρων εἰς ἀχάριστα μάτην θ᾽ ὑπὸ κυφὸν ἄροτρον ταῦρον ὑποζεύχας . Vettius also may be cited for adj. and verb, and the abstract ἀχαριστία .
