Vocabulary of the Greek NT

";virtuous,"; ";excellent,"; as in 1Co. 15:33, is well illustrated by P Oxy III. 642 (ii/A.D.) ἀπολαύσωμεν τῷ χρηστῷ ὑμῶν ἤθει, ib. XIV. 1663.11 (ii/iii A.D.) διὰ τὸ ἦθος τὸ χρηστόν, ";on account of his excellent character,"; and ib. VII. 10 (iii/A.D.), a pompous letter from a man to his wife in which he speaks of τῶν χρηστῶν ἐλπίδων τῶν ἐν ἀνθρώποισι νε [[σ ]]νομισμένων, ";the good hopes that are held by mankind"; (Ed.). See also the citation from the Avircius inscr, s.v. πατρίς.

The thought of ";gracious,"; as in Luk. 6:35, appears in P Leid Wvii. 26 (ii/iii A.D.) ( = I. p. 103) κλῦτί μοι (l. κλῦθί μοι), ὁ χρηστὸς ἐν βαζάνοις (l. βασ -), βοήθησον ἐν ἀνάγκαις, and in such a προσκύνημα as Preisigke 158.1 Ἀνδρόμαχος. . ἀφίκετο πρὸς Ἀμενώθην χρηστὸν θεὸν. . . καὶ ὁ θεὸς αὐτῶι ἐβοήθησε. Note also the common use of the adj. as a descriptive epithet in sepulchral inscrr., e.g. Preisigke 9.4 ἄωρε χρηστὲ χαῖρε, 10.5, al. and its occurrence as a proper name in P Grenf I. 49.11 (A.D. 220–1) ὑπὸ τοῦ λαμπροτάτου ἡγεμόνος Γεμεινίου Χρήστου, al. See also s.v. Χριστιανός.

Its use with reference to things may be seen in P Cairo Zen III. 59349.7 (B.C. 244) εἰ ἔστιν ἤδη χρηστόν, ";if it is now fit for use,"; of a jar of wine, P Oxy XVII. 2148.4 (A.D. 27) ἐκομισάμην τὴν σεμίδ ̣[αλ ]ι ̣ν χρηστὴν οὖσαν, ";I received the fine flour which was good"; (Ed.), .16 ἐάν τι ποιῇς χρηστόν, περιποίησον εἰς οἶκον ἀδελ [φ ]ω ̣ν, ";if you make anything good, make an extra amount for your brothers’ house"; (Ed.), and ib. VI. 937.28 (iii/A.D.) δικότυλον ἐλαίου χρηστοῦ, ";two cotylae of good oil"; (Edd.).
