";a beast of burden,"; confined in the LXX and NT (Matthew 21:5 LXX, 2 Peter 2:16) to a he-ass, cf. P Cairo Zen I.59075.4 (B.C. 257) ( = Deissmann LAE2, p. 162) ἀπέσταλκα. . τὸν παρ᾽ ἡμῶν. . [ἄγοντα τὸν δεῖνα ] ἵππους δύο. . . ̣̣π ̣ο ̣ζ ̣υ ̣γ ̣ι ̣α ̣ [ ]ρ ̣α ̣βι ̣κὰ λευκὰ δύο. . ., ";I have sent N.N., one or our men, bringing two horses, iwo white Arabian asses . . ."; (Deissmann), and P Hib I. 34.3, .5 (B.C. 243–2), and 73.9 (same date), where ὑποζύγιον and ὄνος are interchanged. The reference may be more general in such passages as PSI IV. 359.6 (B.C. 252–1) ὑποζύγια καὶ σάκκους, P Lille I. 13.2 (B.C. 244–3) ὑποζυγίων πεντήκοντα ἐφεστηκότων, and P Tebt II. 92.13 (late ii/ B.C.) ἐντ [εῦθ ]εν κατάγεται δι᾽ ὑποζυγίων, ";(the corn) is thence transported by beasts of burden"; (Edd.).
