gnaw, nibble, munch, esp. of herbivorous animals, as mules, τ. ἄγρωστιν Od. 6.90; of swine, ἐρεβίνθους τ. Ar. III later, simply eat, serving as pres. to ἔφαγον instead of ἐσθίω, ὁ τρώγων μου τὴν σάρκα καὶ πίνων μου τὸ αἷμα John 6:54 (cf. aor. φάγητε.. πίητε ib. 53); τρώγοντες καὶ πίνοντες Matthew 24:38; never in LXX (ὁ ἐσθίων ἄρτους μου LXX Psalms 41:10(40).10 becomes ὁ τρώγων μου τὸν ἄρτον when cited in John 13:18); δύο τρώγομεν ἀδελφοί is dub. l. in Plb. 31.23.9; ἔδωκεν εὔζωμον νήστῃ τρώγειν SIG 1171.9 (Crete, perh. i B. C.); ἡ νὺξ τὴν ἡμέραν τ. (of a black man eating white bread) Diog.Cyn. ap. Sammelb. 5730 (iv/v A. D.); ψυχρὰ τρώγοντα κατακαίεσθαι PMag.Lond. 121.177; ἔμοιγε, ὅσσα παρ' ἀνθρώποις, τρώγειν ἔθος Batr. 34; this usage is mentioned by AB 114, censured by Phot.

τρώγω; to gnaw, crunch, chew raw vegetables or fruits (as nuts, almonds, etc.): ἄγρωστιν, of mules, Homer, Odyssey 6, 90, and often in other writers of animals feeding; also of men from Herodotus down (as σῦκα, Herodotus 1, 71; βότρυς, Aristophanes eqq. 1077; blackberries, the Epistle of Barnabas 7, 8 [ET] (where see Harnack, Cunningham, Müller); κρόμυον, μετά δεῖπνον, Xenophon, conv. 4, 8); universally, to eat: absolutely, (δύο τρώγομεν ἀδελφοί, we mess together, Polybius 32, 9, 9) joined with πίνειν, Matthew 24:38 (so also Demosthenes, p. 402, 21; Plutarch, symp. 1, 1, 2; Ev. Nicod. c. 15, p. 640, Thilo edition (p. 251 Tdf. edition)); τόν ἄρτον, John 13:18 (see ἄρτος 2 and ἐσθίω b.); figuratively, John 6:58; τήν σάρκα, the 'flesh' of Christ (see σάρξ, 1), John 6:54, 56f.

1. prop., of animals, to gnaw, munch, crunch (Hom., al.).

2. Of men, to eat raw food, as vegetables, nuts, etc. (Hdt., al.).

3. In late vernacular, simply to eat (= ἐσθίω ): Matthew 24:38, John 6:54; John 6:56-58; John 13:18 (LXX ἐσθίων ) (v. Kennedy, Sources, 82, 155; MM, xxv).†
