Liddell-Scott-Jones Definitions

συνθάπτω,

bury together, join in burying, τινα A. Th. 1032, S. Aj. 1378, E. Hel. 1545, Pl. Lg. 909c, etc.; τινά τινι one with another, E. Alc. 149, Demad. 13, IG 14.943 (Ostia): Pass., to be buried with, τῷ ἀνδρί Hdt. 5.5, cf. Th. 1.8; συνετάφη τοῖς σώμασιν ἡ ἐλευθερία Lycurg. 50; συνετάφημεν [τῷ Χριστῷ] διὰ τοῦ βαπτίσματος Romans 6:4.

Thayer's Expanded Definition

συνθάπτω: 2 aorist passive συνετάφην; from Aeschylus and Herodotus down; to bury together with: τῷ Χριστῷ, together with Christ, passive, διά τοῦ βαπτίσματος εἰς τόν θάνατον namely, αὐτοῦ, Romans 6:4; ἐν τῷ βαπτίσματι, Colossians 2:12. For all who in the rite of baptism are plunged under the water thereby declare that they put faith in the expiatory death of Christ for the pardon of their past sins; therefore Paul likens baptism to a burial by which the former sinfulness is buried, i. e. utterly taken away.

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

";disturbance."; In P Lond 1912.13 (A.D. 41) the Emperor Claudius writing to the Alexandrines declares himself unwilling to decide who was responsible for τῆς. . πρὸς Ἰουδαίους ταραχῆς καὶ στάσεως, μᾶλλον δ᾽ εἰ χρὴ τὸ ἀληθὲς εἰπεῖν τοῦ πολέμου, ";the riot and feud (or rather, if the truth must be told, the war) against the Jews"; (Ed.). In OGIS 90.20 (Rosetta stone—B.C. 196) ἐν τοῖς κατὰ τὴν ταραχὴν καιροῖς, the reference is to the Lycopolitan sedition, as in P Tor I. 1v. 29 (B.C. 116) ἐν τῆι γενομένηι ταραχῆι. See also Syll 316 (= .3 684).13 (c. B.C. 139). P Amh II. 30.11 (ii/B.C.) ἐν δὲ τῆ ]ι ̣ γενη ̣μένηι ταραχῆι refers most likely to the revolt in thd Thebaid, instigated by Dionysius about B.C. 165, and this may again be the case in UPZ i. 14i .9 (B.C. 168) : cf. p. 479.
