I wisdom, skill, craft, Διὶ μῆτιν ἀτάλαντος (cf. μητίετα) Il.l.c., al.; βροτείη μ. Emp. 2.9; τὰν Διὸς γὰρ οὐχ ὁρῶ μῆτιν, ὅπᾳ φύγοιμ' ἄν A. II counsel, plan, undertaking, ὑφαίνειν μῆτιν Il. 7.324, cf. Od. 4.678, etc.: pl., σοφῶν μητίεσσι Pi. O. l.c.; γυναικοβούλους μήτιδας A. Ch. l.c. Poet. word. (Cf. Skt. mimâti, pf. part. Pass. mitá - 'measure', Lat. metior, O E. mæþ 'measure'.)

Thayer's Expanded Definition

μήτις (so R G John 4:33), more correctly μή τίς;

1. prohibitive, let no one (cf. Buttmann, 31 (28)): (with 1 aorist subjunctive 1 Corinthians 16:11); with 2 aorist subjunctive, 2 Thessalonians 2:8.

2. interrogative (Lat:num quis?) hath anyone etc.: John 7:48; (2 Corinthians 12:17, cf. Buttmann, § 151, 7; Winers Grammar, 574 (534)); where one would gladly believe what he asks about doubtfully (see μήτι, under the end): John 4:33.

";spikenard,"; is found in such passages as PSI VI. 628.7 (iii/B.C.) νάρδου ξηρᾶς μν (αῖ) β ̄, P Oxy VIII. 1088.49 (early i/A.D.) νάρδου (ὀβολός), P Leid Wi. 17 (ii/iii A.D.) νάρδος῎ Ινδικος, and id.ix. 10 where νάρδος is included in a list of ἐπιθύματα : cf. Mark 14:3, John 12:3. See also the adj. in Menander Fragm , p. 78, No. 274 νάρδινον (μύρον). The word is Semitic, cf. Lewy Fremdwörter, p. 40, and is found in Theophr. HP ix. 7. 2 ff.
