1. garden-herbs, opp. wild plants, vegetables, Cratin. 313, Epicr. 11.15, al., Pl. R. 372c, Thphr. HP 1.3.1, etc.; but also λ. ἄγρια Ar. Th. 456, Pl. 298: sg. is rarer, οὐδὲ λ. οὐδὲν.. ὁρῶ not a single herb, Cratin. 191; ὥστε μηδὲ λ. γενέσθαι ἐν τῷ κήπῳ D. 50.61; ἐν τῷ λ. τούτῳ, i.e. the lettuce, Eub. 14, cf. 54, Epicr. 11.25.

2. in pl. also, the vegetable-market, Ar. Lys. 557, Alex. 46.8, Diph. 32.22.

λάχανον, λαχανου, τό (from λαχαίνω to dig; hence, herbs grown on land cultivated by digging; garden-herbs, as opposed to wild plants); any potherb, vegetables: Matthew 13:32; Mark 4:32; Luke 11:42; Romans 14:2; (1 Kings 20:2 (); Genesis 9:3; Psalm 36:2 (), etc.; Aristophanes, Plato, Plutarch, others.)

P Hib I. 54.26 (c B.C. 245) λάχανα π [αντ ]αο ̣δαπά, ";vegetables of all kinds,"; BGU I. 22.22 (A.D. 114) (= Selections, p. 75) ἀπὸ τιμῆς ὧν πέπρακον λαχάνων, ";from the price of the vegetables I had sold,"; P Oxy III. 522.18 (ii/A.D.) τιμ (ῆς) λαχ (άνων) τοῖς αὐ (τοῖς) . . . . (τετρώβολον), ";price of vegetables for the same, 4 obols."; In P Fay 119.38 (c. A.D. 100) πέμσις τὰ κτήνη κοπρηγεῖν εἰς τὸ λάχανον τῆς Ψινάχεως, the word is =";vegetable ground."; For λαχανεία, as in Deuteronomy 11:10, cf.
