κυβέρνησις, κυβερνήσεως, (κυβερνάω (Latingubernare, to govern)), a governing, government: 1 Corinthians 12:28 (others would take it tropically here, and render it wise counsels (R. V. marginal reading); so Hesychius: κυβερνήσεις. προνοητικαι ἐπίστημαι καί φρονησεις; cf. Schleusner, Thesaurus in the Sept., under the word, and to the references below add Proverbs 11:14; Job 37:12 Symm.); (Proverbs 1:5; Proverbs 24:6; Pindar, Plato, Plutarch, others).

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

The verb, which is used of Divine ";guiding"; in Wisdom of Solomon 14:6, is applied to the management of a household in the inscr. quoted s.v. ἀνέγκλητος ad fin. : cf. 1 Corinthians 12:28. The compd. διακυβερνάω is used of a woman ";piloting"; herself and her child out of a time of crisis—ἐκ τοῦ το [ιού ]του καιροῦ ἐμαυτή [ν ] τε καὶ τὸ παιδί [ον σ ]ου διακεκυβερνηκυῖα (P Lond 42.16 (B.C. 168) (= I. p. 30, Selections, p. 10)). For a new literary citation for κυβερνάω see Herodas ii. 99 f. ταῦτα σκοπεῦντες πάντα τὴν δίκην ὀρθῇ | γνώμῃ κυβερνᾶτε.
