κυβείᾳ (κυβία T WH; see Iota), κυβειας, ἡ (from κυβεύω, and this from κύβος a cube, a die), dice-playing (Xenophon, Plato, Aristotle, others); tropically, ἡ κυβείᾳ τῶν ἀνθρώπων, the deception (A. V. sleight) of men, Ephesians 4:14, because dice-players sometimes cheated and defrauded their fellow-players.

The corresponding verb is used in its literal sense of playing with dice or gaming in the magic P Lond 121.424 (iii/A.D.) (= I. p. 98) ποίησόν μοι κυβεύοντα νικῆσαι. For the derived meaning ";cheat"; see Epict. ii. 19. 28, iii. 21. 22. The subst. κυβευτής is found in Vett. Val. p. 202.6 πλαστογράφοι ἅρπαγες θυρεπανοῖκται κυβευταί.
