1. means for judging or trying, standard, freq. of the mental faculties and senses, ἔχων αὐτῶν τὸ κ. ἐν αὑτῷ Pl. Tht. 178b, cf. R. 582a, Plu. 2.448b, etc.; τὸ αἰσθητήριον καὶ κ. τῶν.. χυμῶν Arist. Metaph. 1068a3, cf. Epicur. Ephesians 1 p.5U. (pl.), Sent. 24, al.; περὶ κριτηρίου, title of works by Epicurus (D.L. 10.27), Posidonius (Diocl. ap. D.L. 7.54), and Ptolemy: generally, χρόνον εἶναι μέτρον καὶ κ. τάχους measure, test, Zeno Stoic. 1.26, etc.

2. court of judgement, tribunal, Pl. Lg. 767b; καθίζειν κ. Plb. 9.33.12, cf. PHib. 1.29 (a) (iii B. C.), 1 Corinthians 6:2, IG 14.951.20, Paus. 2.20.7, POxy. 2134.6 (ii A. D.), etc. decision of a tribunal, judgement, SIG 826 K 9 (Delph., ii B. C.).

κριτήριον, κριτηρίου, τό (from κριτηρ, equivalent to κριτής);

1. properly, the instrument or means of trying or judging anything; the rule by which one judges (Plato, Plutarch, others).

2. the place where judgment is given; the tribunal of a judge; a bench of judges: plural, 1 Corinthians 6:2; James 2:6 (the Sept.; Plato, Polybius, Plutarch, others).

3. in an exceptional usage, the matter judged, thing to be decided, suit, case: plural 1 Corinthians 6:4 (this sense is denied by many; cf. e. g. Meyer on 1 Corinthians 6:2).

κριτήριον in the sense of ";tribunal,"; ";court of justice,"; as in 1 Corinthians 6:2; 1 Corinthians 6:4 (RV marg.), James 2:6 (cf. Judges 5:10 al.), is frequent in the papyri, e.g. P Hib I. 29 Fr. (a) recto.5 (c. B.C. 265) (= Chrest. I. p. 306) ἐὰν δὲ ἀν ]τιλ ̣ε ̣γ ̣ηι, κριθήτωσα [ν ἐ ]π ̣[ ] τοῦ ἀ [ποδε ]δειγμένου κ ̣[ρι ]τ ̣η ̣ρ ̣ι ̣ου, ";if he dispute the decision, they shall be tried before the appointed tribunal"; (Edd.), P Grenf I. 15.7 (B.C. 146 or 135) ὅπ ]ως μὴ περισπώμεθα ἐπὶ τὰ [.........]τα κριτήρια, BGU IV. 1054.1.(time of Augustus) Π ]ρωτάρχωι τῶι ἐπὶ τοῦ κριτηρίου παρὰ Ἀπολλωνίου, P Oxy X. 1270.16 (A.D. 159) πρὸς τῇ ἐπιμελείᾳ τ [ῶν χρηματιστῶν ] καὶ τῶν ἄλλων κριτηρί [ων, and similarly P Tebt II. 319.2 (A.D. 248).
