With Hebrews 8:12 cf. P Par 51.24 (B.C. 160) (= Selections, p.20) ἐλθέ μοι, θεὰ θεῶν, εἵλεως γινομένη, ἐπάκουσόν μου, ἐλέησον τὰς Διδύμας, and similarly Leid Uii. 19 (ii/B.C.). See also OGIS 383.286 (mid i/B.C.) ἐγὼ πατρῴους ἅπαντας θεοὺς. . . εἵλεως εἰς πᾶσαν χάριν εὔχομαι διαμένειν, .233 παρὰ τῆς ἐμῆς εὐχῆς ἵλεως δαίμονας καὶ θεοὺς πάντας ἐχέτω. For the phrase in Matthew 16:22 (cf. LXX Genesis 43:23, 2 Kings 20:20, 1 Chronicles 11:19) see Cagnat I. 107.10 Ἵλεώς σοι, ἀλύπι, and OGIS 721.10 (iv/A.D.) (= Letronne 221) ἵλεως ἡμῖν Πλάτων καὶ ἐνταῦθα, with the other exx. in Proleg. p. 240, where the deprecatory meaning is compared with our vernacular expression, ";Mercy on us !";
