2. c. acc., to be astonished at, θάμβησαν δ' ὄρνιθας Od. 2.155, cf. 16.178; τὸν ἐθάμβεον Ἄρτεμίς τε καὶ Ἀθάνα Pi. N. 3.50; τέρας δ' ἐθάμβουν A. Supp. 570 (lyr.): in late Prose, Plu. Aem. 34.

θαμβέω, θαμβω; passive, imperfect ἐθαμβουμην; 1 aorist ἐθαμβήθην; (θάμβος, which see);

1. to be astonished: Acts 9:6 Rec. (Homer, Sophocles, Euripides)

2. to astonish, terrify: 2 Samuel 22:5; passive to be amazed: Mark 1:27; Mark 10:32; followed by ἐπί with the dative of the thing, Mark 10:24; to be frightened, 1 Macc. 6:8; Wis. 17:3; Plutarch, Caesar 45; Brut. 20. (Compare: θάμβος (allied with τάφος amazement, from a Sanskrit root signifying to render immovable; Curtius, § 233; Vanicek, p. 1130), θάμβους, τό; from Homer down; amazement: Luke 4:36; Luke 5:9; Acts 3:10.

See P Leid Wv. 30 (ii/iii A.D.) ἰδὼν τὸν δράκοντα ὁ θεὸς ἐθαμβήθη καὶ ἐπόππυσε, and ib.xi. 39 καὶ ἡ γῆ ἀκούσασαἠχοῦς, καὶ ἰδοῦσα αὐτήν, ἐθαμβήθη, where the aor. has its full pass. force as in Mark 1:27 (cf. Blass-Debrunner § 78). The verb is restored in the new Logion, P Oxy IV. 654.7 μὴ παυσάσθω ὁ ζη [τῶν. . . . . . . . ἕως ἂν ] εὕρῃ καὶ ὅταν εὕρῃ [θαμβηθήσεται καὶ θαμ ]βηθεὶς βασιλεύσει. In MGr we have θαμπαίνω and θαμπώνω = ";blind,"; ";dazzle.";
