Vocabulary of the Greek NT

For the masc. ὁ ἦχος (as in Hebrews 12:19) cf. P Leid Wx. 3 (ii/iii A.D.) ἵνα ἐκ τοῦ ἤχους (om.) ὕδατος ὁ ἦχος ἀναβῇ, and ib.x. 8 ἦχον ἐκπέμπει. The gen. ἠχοῦς from the fem. ἡ ἠχώ is, however, read by the editor in ib.V. 38 σὺ μὲν ἀπὸ ποππυσμοῦ τυνχάνεις, οὖτος δὲ ἐξ ἠχοῦς, xi. 39 καὶ ἡ γῆ ἀκούσασα ἠχοῦς, καὶ ἰδοῦσα αὐτήν, ἐθαμβήθη, and xii. 51 σὺ μὲν ἐξ ἠχοῦς εἶ, οὗτος δὲ ἐκ φθόγγου : cf. Luke 21:25, where WH similarly accent ἠχοῦς, stating (Notes.2, p. 165) that the direct Bibl. evidence for the neut. τὸ ἦχος is confined to Jeremiah 28:16 [MT Jeremiah 51:16] אAB, where ἦχος is apparently an accusative. For masc. nouns passing into the neut., in accordance with a not uncommon practice in Hellenistic, see Hatziakis Einl. p. 356 ff., Proleg. p. 60.
