Vocabulary of the Greek NT

εὐσεβής occurs in a somewhat general sense in P Flor III. 338.2 (iii/A.D.) εὐσεβὲς τὸ πρᾶγμα ποιεῖς, ἐὰν ποιήσῃς τὸ βιβλίδιον ἐκεῖνο ὡς ἐγύμνασα αὐτὸ σύν σοι ἐν τῇ πόλει : it is applied to taxes in P Cairo Preis 4.9 (A.D. 320) ἐγεώργησα πλεῖστα ἀναλώματα ποιησάμενος ὑπὲρ τοῦ εὐμαρῶς δύνασθαί με διαλύσασθαι τὰς εὐσεβεῖς εἰσφοράς. For its use as an Imperial designation (= Pius), from the close of ii/A.D., see P Hamb I. 13.2 (A.D. 210) ἔτους ι ̄η ̄ Λουκίου Σεπτιμίου Σ ̣ε ̣ουήρου Εὐσεβοῦς Περτίνακος κτλ., with the editor’s note. In the Commagene rescript (see s.v. εὐσέβεια) we find—στεφανούτω πάντας τοῖς χρυσοῖς στεφάνοις, οὓς ἐγὼ καθιέρωσα δαιμόνων εὐσεβέσι τιμαῖς (OGIS 383.139). Interesting too are the occurrences in Egyptian sepulchral inscrr., as Preisigke 2048 (ii/B.C.) Πτολεμαῖε χρηστέ, χαῖρε, καὶ εὐσεβῶν ἵκοιο χῶρον, and the poetical inscr. edited by Rubensohn in Archiv v. p. 164, where one of the lines runs—

Μίνω σύνθωκος δ᾽ εἰμὶ παρ᾽ εὐσεβέσιν.
