Εὖρος, ὁ, the East wind (later, as dist. fr. ἀπηλιώτης, ESE.), Il. 2.145, Arist. Mete. 363b21, Mu. 394b20, IG 14.1308, etc. (Connected with ἠώς by Gell. 2.22.7, with αὔρα by Vitr. 1.6.11. Possibly from εὕω, because parching.)

For the formation of this word, which is not found except in Acts 27:14, the lexicographers compare Εὐρόνοτος. According to Blass (ad l.), it is a ";vox hybrida"; made up of εὖρος and aquilo (qui Lat. = κυ ̆ as in Ἀκύλας 18.2) : cf. Goodspeed Exp VI. viii. p. 140, ";the Greek east wind combined with the Latin north-east (more exactly east-north-east) wind.";
