1 thread, as easily broken Judges 16:12 (simile); as composing a rope or cord; הַשָּׁנִי הַזֶּה׳תִּקְוַת ח Joshua 2:18 (JE) this cord of scarlet thread (literally the cord of this thread of scarlet); probably also מִחוּט וְעַד שְׂרוֺךְ נַעַל Genesis 14:23 from a thread to a sandal-thong; in simile ׳כְּחהַשָּׁנִי Song of Solomon 4:3 like a thread of scarlet are thy lips.
2 cord, הַמְּשֻׁלָּשׁ׳הַח Ecclesiastes 4:12 a three-fold cord.
3 line, as measure of length 1 Kings 7:15 and a line of twelve cubits surrounded (i.e. would surround) it (compare קָו 1 Kings 7:23), so Jeremiah 52:21.
חִוִּי see below II. חוה.
חוּט Chald. to sew, to sew together, Syriac ܚܘܽܛ, Arab. خاط Med. Ye id.
Aphel, to repair a wall, Ezra 4:12 comp. רָפָא. Hence
חוּט m.
(1) a thread, a line, Judges 16:12; Ecclesiastes 4:12; Song of Solomon 4:3. A proverbial saying, Genesis 14:23, מִחוּט וְעַד שְׂרוֹךְ נַעַל “neither a thread nor a shoe-latchet,” i.e. not even the least or the most worthless thing. Similar is the Latin neque hilum (Lucr. iii. 784; Enn. ap. Varr. L. L. iv. 22), for neque filum, whence nihil. A similar proverb is used in Arabic لا فتيلا, see Hamasa, Schultens, p. 404.
(2) a rope, cord [collect. of No. 1 in Thes.], Joshua 2:18.
