Vocabulary of the Greek NT

This verb, along with the corresponding subst. ἐπίκρισις, is very common of the ";examination"; of persons liable to military service, as e.g. in P Oxy I. 39.11 (A.D. 52) where, with reference to a man who had been released owing to defective eyesight, it is stated—ἐπεκρίθ (η) ἐν Ἀλεξανδ (ρείᾳ); cf. BGU I. 142.1 (A.D. 159) ἐπεκρίθη Ἰσίδωρος. . . ἱππεὺ [ς ] τύρμης Ἀπο [λ ]λιναρίου υ ̣̔[πὸ ] Ἰσιδώρου. Both ἐπικρίνω and ἐπίκρισις are also used in connexion with the ";selection"; of boys aged 11–14 for admission to the list of privileged persons who were exempt from the poll-tax : see P Lond II. p. 42 ff., P Oxy II. p. 217 ff., and Wilcken Papyruskunde I. i. p. 142. For the ἐπικριτής, or magistrate who made the ἐπίκρισις, see P Fay 27.3 (A.D. 151–2), P Tebt II. 320.2 (A.D. 181) al. A wider use of the verb is seen in ib. II. 284.2 (i/B.C.) where, in obedience to an oracular response from the god Soknebtunis, Lysimachus informs his sister—ἐπικέκριταί μοι μὴ καταβῆναι ἕως τῆς κ ̄ε ̄, ";it has been decided for me that I should not go down till the 25th"; (Edd.) : cf. Luke 23:24, and for ἐπίκριμα = ";edict,"; see P Tebt II. 286.4 (A.D. 121–138). In MGr the verb = ";judge,"; ";criticize.";
