עָשִׁיר m. (from the root עָשַׁר), rich, Proverbs 10:15, 14:20 18:11, and frequently.
(a) in a good sense, honourable, noble, Ecclesiastes 10:6 but
(b) in a bad sense, haughty, impious, inasmuch as riches are the fountain of pride, and pride is used in Hebrew as equivalent to impiety, Isaiah 53:9, compare Job 27:19, and verse 13 Job 27:13. See also הוֹלְלִים (under the word הָלַל No. 3), עָנָו and עָנִי, and interpreters on Isaiah 2:7, 53:9 Matthew 19:23.
