Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

שָׁתָה fut. יִשְׁתֶּה apoc. יֵשְׁתְּ

(1)  to drink. (Syr., Chald., Ethiop., id. Synonymous is שָׁקָה, in Kal and Niphal not used, whence Hiphil הִשְׁקָה.) Followed by an acc. of the drink, Exodus 34:28 followed by מִן Job 21:20 (as to which passage, compare כּוֹס), followed by בְּ of, from any thing, with the addition of the idea of pleasure, Proverbs 9:5 also followed by בְּ of the vessel (compare בְּ A, 1, a), Amos 6:6. Metaph. Job 15:16, שֹׁתֶה כַמַיִם עַוְלָה “drinking iniquity as water,” i.e. altogether replete with iniquity, abounding in it, compare 34:7. But Proverbs 26:6, the same phrase is used in a passive sense, “the lame drinks in iniquity,” i.e. must suffer it, cannot avenge it.

(2) to drink together, to banquet, Esther 7:1 compare מִשְׁתֶּה.

Niphal, pass. of Kal No. 1, Leviticus 11:34.

Hiphil, see שָׁקָה.

Derivatives, מִשְׁתֶּה, שְׁתִי No. I, שְׁתִיָּה.

II.

שָׁתָה an unused verb. Arab. سقى IV. i.q. اسْدَى to fix the warp in the loom, Syr. ܐܰܫܬܺܝ to weave. Hence שְׁתִי No. II.
